So here's the deal: I don't want a land line because I'm not 80 years old. I don't want cable television because if I got it, I'm pretty sure I'd get sucked into this Hills business with frightening speed and efficiency. (Oh, how I miss you, O.C.) I do, however, want high-speed internet in my apt., and I'd like to get it for as cheap as possible.

After a weekend spent browsing the sites of the usual suspects like Comcast and Qwest, I'm left (A) bewildered by package plans that seem intentionally obtuse and ridiculously expensive, and (B) yep, still bewildered by package plans that seem intentionally obtuse and ridiculously expensive.

So: Does anybody in Portland have a high-speed internet service (again, just high-speed internet, no cable, no land line) that doesn't suck, and doesn't require me to sign some sort of multi-year contract and/or sell a kidney on the black market in order to pay the bill? Help and advice, please.
