Stare into his eyes....

  • Stare into his eyes....

You may have seen this strange individual along with eight plaques and a stag on a pedestal downtown on the transit mall. It all adds up to the newest art installation along the transit mall, which puts one percent of its budget toward public art. The work was officially unveiled along several blocks of the mall this week and, well, here's how the artist describes the piece including the "green man" above:

The story-markers, which relate the details of Daniel Duford’s invented urban legend in a format inspired by graphic novels, were installed in the past few weeks. The sculptures are bronze on glass reinforced cast concrete plinths approximately nine feet tall.

Through this multi-part work, Duford weaves in the history of Portland and aspects of the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood to create a local version of an early medieval myth. The artwork re-imagines the more intimate experience of reading a graphic novel into the experience of “walking through” a book in the time and space required by walking the street.
