When studios refused to fund Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.'s comic Kick-Ass, Vaughn figured out how to independently finance the thing himself. And as soon as Vaughn was finished shooting it, and soon as everyone realized that it looked fucking awesome, studios like Lionsgate and Universal jumped at the chance to distribute the film.
Here's a pretty fantastic red-band trailer focusing on one of Kick-Ass' characters, Hit-Girl. (A previous clip of Hit-Girl caused a bit of a ruckus a few weeks ago, too.) You can probably see why studios might've been nervous about financing this thing.
But you know what? Fuck 'em. If there were more filmmakers doing what Vaughn decided to do, rather than relying on whatever studios deemed to be okay, we'd have a lot more films that look as cool as this and a lot fewer films featuring people like the Morgans.
