Good news for people who need Valentine's Day gifts and support women's literacy. Two Dollars a Day is a local nonprofit that aims to create awareness about the impact of women's literacy on the development of impoverished countries, and it's having a fundraising sale this Sunday, January 31, from 12-4 pm at Urban Grind East. Expect craft vendors, a rummage sale, and a bake sale.
Money raised will be split among an organization called Adelante Mujeres, a literacy program in Chiapas, Mexico, and the continued efforts of Two Dollars a Day. In addition to the sale this weekend, Two Dollars a Day Executive Director Kelly Thoen is gearing up for a 1,100 mile run from Portland to Tijuana, Mexico this spring. She plans to run 8 to 12 miles a day, stopping at universities along the way to speak and raise money. According to Thoen, the long term goal of Two Dollars a Day is to "create cooperative learning centers for women to gain an education, learn valuable job skills by helping to operate the center, gain job placement assistance and help each other with childcare."
Word(s) to your mother/females in general. Hit up the sale this Sunday.
