Friend of Man Shot By Police: "He always told me not to mess with guns"

Posted by Angela Webber on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 3:39 PM

We've just driven down to 190th and Stark to meet Jimmy Jimenez, a friend of Keaton Otis, 25, the man who was shot by the police on Wednesday.

We contacted Jimenez through MySpace, where he had posted last night "R.I.P. Keaton Otis. What the fuck man." and set his mood as "Fuck the Police." Jimenez said in retrospect he regretted posting that about the police. "It's just something I wrote. I took it down. I probably shouldn't have written that."

Those posts were made last night, when Jimenez first heard about the shooting."My brother and I were sitting around…and then got a phone call, 'Keaton's dead.'" Jimenez said his first thought was "Keaton, no, he can't be dead."

Jimenez, 18, said that Keaton was a friend of his older brother Danny's from high school, a "nice, loving person" who always told him to stay away from guns.

"I think it was a racial thing," Jimenez said, when asked why the police might have shot Otis. "There are a lot of black people being killed by the police recently."

Jimenez described his friend as a calm guy who liked to design his own clothes. He doesn't know what Keaton did for a living, but said that he wasn't into guns, drugs, or gang activity. We asked him why Keaton might have had a gun, but he said he didn't know. "He always told me to stay away from guns. Either you're going to kill somebody or get killed. Not a good thing."

Jimenez said that his brother told him not to speak out about Otis's shooting, but Jimenez wanted to say something. He pulled up a photo on his computer of Otis holding his brother Danny's baby. "Look at this picture and you look at the things that people were writing about him in the Oregonian, that he was this kind of guy or that kind of guy—it made me mad."

Jimenez watched the video of the shooting online. "40 shots for one guy, that's a lot," he said.

Jimenez described knowing Keaton since he was five years old, but hadn't been in contact with him in about a year.

Jimenez and a friend wrote on MySpace that they would "smoke a bowl" in memory of Otis. When asked if that was something Keaton would have done, Jimenez said, "No, that's just something I do. I smoke it because I was jumped by four African-American guys a while back, and they don't want to prescribe me codeine or anything because I'll get addicted." Jimenez said he doesn't have a medical marijuana license but plans on getting one soon.

Jiminez was arrested earlier this year for stealing a computer from Marshall High School, something he says he is "dealing with right now." He said he's a student, though not in school right now. "I'm being tutored."

Jiminez said that he wished his friend was here with him now. "I can't believe what happened to him, it's a sad, sad thing."
