A 37-year-old West Linn man James Hill died yesterday in a tragic crash. Here's the details from BikePortland:

The West Linn PD say that according to witnesses and an investigation, Hill was "traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the intersection, disregarded a stop sign and was unable to negotiate the sharp right turn he was attempting." A Ford Expedition was going southbound on Willamette Drive and Hill "lost control of his bicycle" and slid under it.

In case you're curious, here's the stats about Portland traffic fatalities from 1996-2009. Thanks to Greg Raisman at the city for the numbers.

Weirdly, also over the weekend in West Linn, three people riding bikes likely saved the life of a woman whose car had crashed into some brush. From KGW:

The cyclists were riding along SW Mountain Rd. when they heard the woman’s faint calls for help. Then, they spotted Nicole Bacchus, 29, trapped in the wreckage of a smashed car in the bottom of a ravine.

The cyclists helped the woman until paramedics arrived. Then, she was rushed to a local hospital with severe injuries.
