Volkswagen sponsored this fun little project in Sweden: Installing a "lottery" speed camera that sends tickets to speeding drivers, then pools some of the money and rewards it randomly to people who were driving the speed limit. Portland could use one of these right around Columbia Boulevard...

Something else awesome about Sweden: In 1997, the Swedish Parliament started a project called Vision Zero, which aimed to re-do road standards and enforce safety laws so that the country would have zero traffic deaths by 2020. I thought it would be impossible, but by 2010 they had only 355 traffic fatalities, the lowest per capita rate in the world. Wow. That's a big culture shift from here, where "accidents" are viewed as inevitable. Hooray Sweden!
