At Circa 33 tonight (3348 SE Belmont), Upright Brewing is releasing their brand-new Kopstootje Biere, a collaboration with Bols Genever in effort to make a perfect pairing for the Dutch spirit. Genever is the ancestor of the gin we drink today stateside, and is still popular in the Netherlands.

Kopstootje translates literally as “little head butt." It's the Dutch take on a shot with a beer back. According to ritual, the bartender should pour the the liquor to the rim of a tulip glass, then the drinker will bend forward to slurp off the top of the genever (no hands allowed) followed by a sip of beer. You can try it yourself from 5:00 to 8:00 tonight. Upright's Kopstooje will be a traditional biere de gard with the addition of some of the same botanicals used in Bols Genever.

Think you can do better? (Or need a little hair of the dog?) Go by the F.H. Steinbart Co. store (234 SE 12th) on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate the passage of SB 444 , the bill that overturned a bullshit ban on serving homebrew outside of your home. Bring your own bottles, and sip other people's when they're not looking. Festivities should run into the afternoon, until everyone heads up to Mt. Tabor park to get loaded and argue about dry-hopping.
