But wait, you ask: Isn't the Man Booker prize awarded to authors from the British Commonwealth? ie, not from the U.S.? Yep. deWitt was born in Canada. Sneaky, sneaky Canadian.
Here's the rest of the list (winner announced 10/18):
Julian Barnes for The Sense of an Ending
Carol Birch for Jamrach’s Menagerie
Esi Edugyan for Half Blood Blues
Stephen Kelman for Pigeon English
A D Miller for Snowdrops
deWitt is nominated for The Sisters Brothers, an unconventional period piece about two outlaw brothers that's set in Oregon and California in the 1950s. I interviewed deWitt about the book earlier this year—it's a good, funny interview, but my favorite bit was in regards to his decision to ditch the constraints of historical accuracy in telling his story: "At some point I remembered that I could do anything I wanted to." That's fiction, for ya.
