On Saturday afternoon, the Multnomah County Library's downtown branch will host the PDX installment of author James Kennedy's 90-Second Newbery Film Festival. Each video in the festival compresses the plot of a Newbery Award-winning children's book into a 90-second video. The Portland edition—which Kennedy is co-hosting with locally based writer Laini Taylor, author of the great Daughter of Smoke and Bone—will feature local submissions alongside contributions from other cities, plus music and special guests. This Wrinkle in Time video made me laugh out loud:
Here's a post about Kennedy's stay in Portland so far (he's been rubbing elbows with local comics creators Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett, and Steve Lieber) that includes a locally made film about Rebecca Stread's amazing When You Reach Me, which is based on A Wrinkle in Time and which EVERYONE SHOULD READ because it's a brilliant, brilliant book.
Honestly, I can't imagine a more delightful Saturday afternoon than this. It's from 3-5 pm at the Central Library. I'm so there.
Oh! And in other library news: The Tidal Wave Bookstore is having a March Madness sale, also on Saturday, from 9 am-5 pm—55% off all used books.
