The Sunday of any con is a descending tail of activity. People gradually percolate out of the proceedings, try to beat traffic, and things usually wrap up in the late afternoon or early evening. I spent Sunday mostly just wandering about and indulging in my fanboy proclivities on the show floor and going to a panel that was actually about themes in comic fiction and writing, as opposed to being a dog-and-pony show of a publisher’s new releases. Kurt Busiek moderated a panel on what he called “mythic fiction” (think Sandman, Fables, other Vertigo-y type stuff) and the discussion on the panel was, rather shockingly, about characters and themes and story and other arty stuff. It blew away every other panel I went to, and I left wishing that more ECCC panels were just a bit more Wordstock-esque.

One of the best parts of any large-scale nerd parties is cosplay, i.e., fans of various sorts milling about while dressed as their favorite fictional characters. After the jump, a rundown of some of the most impressive (non cringe-inducing) fan costumes from the ECCC.

I cannot overstate the magnificent amounts of swagger this man had.

All of those blue lights were totally functional- this guy was basically an ambulatory lava lamp.

See his hands? Notice how he’s pulling on cords while he’s posing. Those wings moved. He could fold them up or splay them out like you see in the picture. Not only did this guy make a gigantic feather-thing to wear on his back, he also rigged up a system of wearable pulleys to move his giant wings about. People surrounding him said “ooh.”

There were several Benders. This was, by far, the best of them.
