I eat a lot of Meat Cheese Bread breakfast burritos. It is a somewhat shameful thing to admit to the internet, but I am a burrito regular. (Though that might taper off somewhat now that Wolf and Bear's has re-opened their Southeast location.) While I was there this morning enjoying my third burrito of the week, Meat Cheese Bread's owner showed me a few of the cars that will be racing in tonight's Meat Cheese Bread Pinewood Derby—basically a miniature soapbox derby, with little wooden cars. The derby, which is taking place at Nemo design studio's HQ at 18th and Belmont, also features an art auction and car show, with proceeds going to Mercy Corps. (A nice gesture of thanks, since Meat Cheese Bread got off the ground with help of a Mercy Corps loan.)

What is Pinewood Derby?
The pinewood derby is a racing event for Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America. Cub Scouts, with the help of parents, build their own cars from wood, usually from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles. Supplies can easily be obtained at hobby, hardware stores and online.

Pinewood derby cars are basically like miniature soapbox cars, approximately 1/24 scale.

For this event we are opening registration to any and all adults! Yes, that's right. This means no DAD to tell you what to do or how to build your car!

I think it's too late to register online, but John said that if you show up with your car early tonight you can still likely snag a spot. Again, that's tonight at NEMO, 1875 SE Belmont—doors at 6 pm, the race is at 8 pm, beer drinking and milling continue til 10.
