I was in high school when Stephen Chobsky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower came out—I think I was 16—and of course I loved it: It was about people like me! Who lived in the suburbs and liked the Smiths and had a gay friend and were shy! Picking it up again for a book club a few years ago, though, was possibly the most excruciatingly embarrassing reading experience I've ever had, up there with rereading my old gournal—it's so melodramatic and self-serious, so full of affectation and posturing, so completely teenaged.
