Nicolas Winding Refn—the fantastic director behind Drive, Valhalla Rising, Bronson, the Pusher trilogy, and the upcoming Only God Forgives—is going to make Barbarella into a TV series. Oh, hey, guess who was in Drive and GUESS WHO WOULD BE PERFECT TO PLAY BARBARELLA.

From Variety:

[The series] will be based on the French science-fiction comic book character created by Jean-Claude Forest. The iconic character inspired French-Italian helmer Roger Vadim's 1968 pic Barbarella toplining Jane Fonda, which has become a cult favorite.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to re-invent Barbarella with my friends at Gaumont and Martha DeLaurentiis," said Refn. "And I look forward to bringing this unique character to life for a new generation of fans as I believe she is one of the ultimate counter-cultural characters."

There have been aborted attempts to remake the thing—with everyone from Drew Barrymore to Anne Hathaway to Rose McGowan slated to take over for Jane Fonda—but none of 'em have ever gotten off the ground. So I will say only this: If Refn's making anything Barbarella-related, and if he has the smarts to cast his Drive star Christina Hendricks as Barbarella, which I'm guessing he does... well, yes. This is a thing that should happen immediately.

Thanks to Jamie S. Rich for the heads up/making my morning.
