Who knew fans of the Berenstain Bears were so concerned about the legacy of Papa, Mama, Sister, and Brother? MediaBistro reports that 80,000 readers signed a petition urging HarperCollins to follow the recent example of the Jim Henson Company, and stop including Berenstain Bears books in Chick-Fil-A kids meals.

SumOfUs.org founder Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman had this statement: “By partnering with Chick-fil-A, a company that actively bankrolls hatred and discrimination against the LGBT community, HarperCollins is undermining the lessons of the beloved Bear family. The Berenstains should follow the Muppets’ lead, and cut ties with Chick-fil-A. HarperCollins has a chance here to make a stand for equality and strike a blow against bigotry. The 80,000 Americans who signed this petition hope that they do!”

Kids don't make these sorts of consumer decisions, their parents do, and those Berenstain Bear books are a lot more educational and positive than anything I ever got in a Happy Meal as a child. This point is made at the expense of some poor kid who likes getting a book with her sandwich. Chick-fil-A are dicks, but "take books out of kids meals" just isn't a cause I can get behind.
