A great new coffeehouse and bakeshop has just quietly opened in Northeast Portland. After a summer of building up loyalty out of a farmers market booth, Bushel and Peck is now beautifully established in a spot off MLK and Failing (neighboring Ned Ludd in Cafe Brioso's old spot). Don't miss their house-baked goodies, which are on their way to being some of the best breakfast treats in town, served alongside Trailhead Coffee and a small but thoughtful lunch menu featuring sandwiches on housemade bread and biscuits.
Order anything served on/with/as a biscuit—I promise you won't be sorry. This balance of flaky, tender, and moist doesn't come along every day, like the apple-cheddar version that was nothing short of heavenly. Their cookies and bars are just inventive enough to be interesting without neglecting to satisfy. A solid ginger cookie gets an extra textural twist with sesame seeds baked on top, as a caramel-pretzel-almond bar hits that perfect salty/sweet spot. And prices are still low for the quality and effort baked into every treat. Five dollars bought me the three aforementioned pastries, and lunch fare doesn't break $5.50 for specials like a recent bacon, roasted heirloom tomato, garlic aioli and mixed greens sandwich on house bread. The cafe itself is calm, pastel, and features a pretty sweet thermos collection, and friendly and informative staff—if I still lived in Northeast, I would be here all the time. And if you live in Northeast, I bet you'll feel the same way.
