When I first lived in Northeast Portland, I spent more time than I'm proud of at the Nest—a charmingly decrepit dive on 18th and Alberta that offered cheap drinks, plenty of attitude, and a giant smoking patio replete with ping-pong tables and a flat wall for showing movies in fair weather. The number of regulars currently being displaced by the fire that struck this bar on October 10th is astounding, as the community hosted by this single bar was the most loyal and consistent (if sometimes scary) I've ever seen. It's not surprising that the Nest's neighboring bars are ready to help their scorched sister get back on her feet, despite currently absorbing a significant number of new bar tabs.
A series of benefits to rebuild this NE staple kick off this Thursday at the Florida Room, where 25% of the evening's sales will go towards reconstruction of the bar and apartments upstairs, while the Know will host a show for the cause featuring 7 & a Switchblade, Rotties, and Counterfeit Cash (a great Johnny Cash cover band that played regularly at the Nest) on November 6. Finally, on November 17, Duckett's promises a karoke contest, more local bands, a raffle and a silent auction. The Nest expects to be closed for at least three months while they rebuild, so with a little help from their friends they should be up and running early next year. And you can bet their Grand Reopening will be quite the party.
