I was feeling a little uninspired by February's Powell's calendar—other than Cory Doctorow, there was no one on there I'm particularly interested in seeing. Which made it all the more exciting when yesterday Powell's announced the late addition of George Saunders, whose new story collection Tenth of December came out last week. Then this morning, Dave Eggers was added to the roster—though he'll be doing a booksigning only (no reading).
Sanders' book was the subject of a recent, glowing New York Times Magazine feature, which dubbed it "the best book you'll read this year." I'm picking my way through it slowly, and it is indeed excellent—as much as Saunders loves to play around with slang, tech speak, and advertising lingo, his work has always been grounded in big-hearted compassion, and that's never been closer to the surface than in this new collection.
Saunders is reading Friday, February 8 at 7:30 pm at the downtown store.
I haven't read Eggers' new book, but Erik reviewed it here and quite liked it. Eggers will be signing books on Tuesday, February 5 at 6 pm, also at the downtown store.
UPDATE!: Eggers will also be signing at Annie Blooms books on Tuesday at 1 pm. It's very rare for big-name touring authors to stop in anywhere but Powell's—it's great that Eggers is taking the time to swing by one of Portland's many great small bookstores.
