It is not too early to start planning for Valentine's Day because between now and then lies a vast void of nothingness. Plus if you do not have another human being with whom to share your love, there's always animals. Wait, that came out wrong.

But seriously: A Night for the Animals, hosted by The (Vegan) Caterer, is a February 14 banquet dinner at Union/Pine that will benefit Green Acres Farm Sanctuary out in Silverton. It's $35 a head, with a cash bar and raffle prizes from places like Portobello, Blossoming Lotus, NW Veg, and Sweet Pea Baking. If you were planning on throwing down a little shill for that night's dinner anyway, and you can handle one meal or more without animal products, why not double it up as a charitable donation and endear yourself a little more to your date? Couldn't hurt.

Green Acres hinny Ruby is a rare breed mothered by a donkey and fathered by a horse. They are said to be smarter than horses and less stubborn than donkeys. Science!
