Last year, Pulitzer judges opted not to award a prize for fiction, after they failed to choose a winner among runners-up Karen Russell, David Foster Wallace, and Denis Johnson.

Plenty of speculation attended this year's announcement—would literature get the finger again??—but judges did in fact announce a winner: Adam Johnson's excellent (and timely) The Orphan Master's Son, a thriller of sorts set in tightly state-controlled, propaganda driven North Korea.
