LA rapper Schoolboy Q performed two shows at the Crystal Ballroom yesterday. The early show went off without a hitch, but the evening show was interrupted 20 to 30 minutes in, when the show was stopped due to damage to a support beam in the building.

Our photographer Minh Tran was at both shows to get these photos. As Tran reports, "The early show was less than full, but Q exclaimed that if the crowd was this hyped at significantly less than capacity, the sold-out evening show would be riotous. Sure enough, the late show was shut down 30 minutes in when apparently a structural beam cracked based on the crowd jumping and music."
Here's video of Q announcing the premature end of the second show:
From a statement released by the police bureau this morning:
Last evening, April 13, 2014, at 11:18 a.m., Central Precinct officers responded to a request for assistance with crowd control from the Crystal Ballroom. The location, located at 1332 W. Burnside Blvd., was hosting an concert and discovered damage to a support beam. This created an unsafe situation.
Staff began evacuating the crowd, reportedly 1,200 to 1,500 persons and this caused a disturbance, disrupting traffic on W. Burnside Blvd. Officers arrived and were able to clear the streets and assist concert-goers in either safely leaving the area or returning to downstairs section of the venue.
There were no arrests associated with this incident and, as of the writing of this document, no reports of property damage. W. Burnside Blvd. is open at this time.
And the Crystal Ballroom/McMenamins had this to say:
As many of you know, we identified a potential safety concern during last night’s second performance and decided to vacate the building in order to safely assess the situation. While there may well have been nothing to worry about, we wanted to err on the side of safety, and we have structural engineers and city inspectors coming to the building to ensure that everything is as it should be.We'll provide updates on this story as it becomes available. Meanwhile, we have lots of pics from both shows after the jump.
We are naturally offering refunds for last night’s show to everyone who requests one. Meanwhile, we are working to make sure we’re ready to rock for this week’s shows, and will post any cancellations through our socials and emails to ticket holders. We appreciate everyone’s concern and will keep you updated!
