Club 21, originally a Russian Orthodox Church built in the 1930s, now houses some of the darkest air found in modern bars. It's the dive that refreshes, and it features one of the few barstools enshrined to Elliott Smith. They're returning to burger week with another of their classics: The Shadow Burger, only $5.

Club 21s $5 SHADOW BURGER

The Shadow Burger is named after a former incarnation of the space, back when it was eerily named The Shadows. (BTW that name's free again, prospective dive owners.) It's Painted Hills ground chuck, bacon, smoked Gouda, lettuce, and tomato-bacon Jam, topped with an onion ring. It's one of the heftier entrants so far, and if you, like me, find that smoked gouda and bacon combine to create a flavor I describe as meatbuttercandybutter, you won't want to miss it.

This is how the Shadow Burger is more likely to appear in its natural habitat.
