Thrillist has done a state-by-state comparison to discover which is the booziest in the nation. Perhaps unsurprisingly Oregon came out top, helped by the numbers of breweries, wineries, distilleries and bars and by the fact that we drink 2.65 gallons of booze a year. Well done us! The sweep of states from Alaska down to Colorado all scored well—though Utah’s odd drinking laws severely let the side down—and 13 of the top 20 are west of the Mississippi. New Hampshire, though, captured the brute statistic of the most alcohol consumed per capita; perhaps it’s the harsh winters (in fact, most of the top 10 states have cold winters). Meanwhile, south of the Mason-Dixon line, especially the bottom right-hand corner, is a ghost town full of tumble weeds when it comes to boozing, and take nearly all of the bottom slots.

The top five are:
1. Oregon
2. Colorado
3. Alaska
4. Montana
5. Vermont

The methodology took into account the number of breweries per adult population, last call times, bars and alcohol consumed per capita, underage exemptions, economic impact of craft beer and days of the week booze is sold. While the compilers of the data themselves admit that it’s not wholly scientific, it does point to the fact that if you enjoy the pleasures of drinking, stay put in Oregon, but if you want to sober up and live a healthier life consider moving to the South.
