If you're still playing the field as far as 4th of July weekend plans, I hereby submit this for your consideration: As you may know, longtime Mercury Art Director Justin "Scrappers" Morrison left us a few months ago to concentrate fully on his own publication, Stay Wild, which is devoted to making sure your life includes plenty of outdoor adventures—and not just like "hiking" or whatever. More like climbing a mountain buck naked and then tackling a boar and riding it off a cliff into a 200-foot waterfall. That kind of stuff. Wild stuff! Except with really nice photographs.

Anyhow, Stay Wild has big love for board sports, and next Saturday they're co-hosting (with New Belgium) a Kook Out (not a typo—it's for "kooks only"): It's a party with beer and hot tubs, but it's also a surfing contest (again, for kooks only, not pro surfers). Prizes will be awarded based on "the most kooked-out tricks, costumes, and styles," and they are even getting a gas generator so that surf band Ed Ghost Tucker can play "in the sand next to the crashing the waves (so dangerous!)."

It will be like this, but louder, kookier, and probably with a firework or two:
