To all you so-called Portland progressives: If you support Uber’s illegal activity in Portland and use their service, I don’t want to hear one more hypocritical word about companies forcing workers to work overtime for free, or illegal subprime mortgages, or discrimination or anything else, because you can’t have it both ways. Either laws apply to everyone or they don't.

“But Uber is faster and cheaper and ‘sharing’” I hear you whine. Yeah, just think how much faster and cheaper flying would be if airlines didn’t have to do all those time-wasting and costly safely inspections or hire licensed pilots or have insurance. They’re really just “sharing” their airplanes for money after all.

Hey! If laws are optional when I call it “sharing” how about I “share” your TV in the middle of the night, and then “share” it with the pawn shop for 50 bucks? Or do I only get to decide the law doesn’t apply to me if I’m a billion dollar multi-national company?

So keep believing that codes designed to protect public safety are “antiquated” and it’s ok for Uber to break the law. You don’t need laws to protect you from transportation that is “potentially dangerous, offensive, harmful to minors, unsafe or otherwise objectionable.” (Uber's terms of use.) At least Not until you’re taken on one of their “inefficient” routes to a remote parking lot, or end up unconscious and half-naked in a hotel room with one of their drivers, or are run over in the street. You probably deserve it.
