I'm never going to be on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or any of it ever again. Social media is so fucking toxic. It's anything but "social." It's such a passive form of communication. Social media is full of dumb selfies and embarrassing baby photos and typo-ridden status updates and misinformed opinions. Because of limited word counts and probably limited brain capacity, social media posts are full of typos. There's way too much oversharing on social media. I don't give a shit about someone's misinformed and ignorant opinion; I don't give a shit about what someone ate for breakfast this morning. Everyone and their monkey's uncle is on social media now. I don't want to be Facebook friends with every freaking person I've ever met or am related to. Social media is all about hyperbole and sensationalism. People online can hide behind anonymity and harass people they dislike and call people nasty names and compare each other to Nazis. Social media has made politics more extreme and less civil. There's no hope of finding a middle ground or reaching a consensus or making a compromise anymore. Social media has helped fuel the rise of identity politics. People are willingly putting themselves into narrow categories and alienating and dehumanizing anyone who's different. Social media is making people so self-involved. Selfies are so arrogant and narcissistic. FB and Twitter and Tumblr and Instagram and all the rest have taught me a valuable lesson: People suck, especially online.
