Free publicity for everyone! Hooray!
2
For the record: A Tiger Lemonade stand would be the shit!
3
We should pay Tom Leykis to do a bit on this. I'm sure he'd mention that the women protesting aren't women that men would pay to see in bikini's.

4
aren't there some work safety issues? those girls are gonna scald the shit out of themselves.
5
I'm not sure if this makes me really mad or if I don't care.

I'll get back to you.
6
I'm actually surprised at the commenters' savvy on this, so far. I'd say last year, there'd have been 50 comments on here by now, all screaming and shouting about it. But now, people are more interested in having "rational discussions," and so on.

I saw a KXL van down there this morning, following the story, and you know, I was thinking, "this is a story for people who don't read Blogtown very often." But we'll see.

bikini title loans

Where do they find the time to protest this stuff? Don't they have jobs? And if you are gonna throw yourself into the protest arena, why not choose a better issue? Plenty to choose from: illegal war, illegal wiretapping, election fraud, our city's persecution of the homeless, the existence of the OLCC, etc
9
wait, what? prudish shorts? booooooring.
10
bikini protesters protesting stumptown's non-bikini workplace
11
i agree with "mmm". i could care less what my barista wears. however for their safety, i would think they'd want to protect themselves a bit more from potential burns from hot water. isn't there some law that requires you to at least have closed-toe shoes on? (i know it is required at the coffee shop that i work at).
12
bikini DMV - same clerks.
13
I wouldn't even have noticed this place if the baristas weren't always outside posing for photographs.
14
Ms. Orr has hit the nail on the head.

If women have the choice, then some women are going to choose something like this.

What the protesters appear to be protesting is that other women are making a different choice than they are, and other people (the customers) are making a choice to participate. Prescriptivist nonsense.

(NOTE: Yes, I'm a straight male who likes looking at fit young women. Bite me.)
15
i bet their heating bills are going to suck october-june.
16
I wonder if they'll be around long enough for their heating bills to become a problem.
17
what brand of coffee are they serving?
18
These "protestas" are FULL of Horse SHIT! Anyone who can make a living legally (in this economy) by wearing a bikini is AOK in AHSG's book.
19
Is the owner of the shop paying those protesters? As a cheap form of advertising? Because if their goal is to put the place out of business, I can't think of anything less likely to succeed, short of donating half a million dollars...
20
I work in the Yeon Building and have NO CHOICE but to pass by this "coffee shop" many times a day. I now involuntarily tense up and scan the landscape for lurkers EVERY TIME I go in and out of our building. These young women do not seem to realize that they themselves are not offensive; it's the potentially questionable characters attracted to their sexual display that is threatening to the rest of us. Sorry, girls, you don't live and work in isolation. BTW, did you know that the Mead Building is a block away, the place where sex offenders go to meet with their parole officers and such. You do the math.
21
breast feeding is allowed in public, why not bikinis?
22
Sounds like you shouldn't work so close to the Mead Building either then.
23
That's right, because this is Portland and we're so hip and cool that anything goes, right? It's even hip to go to strip clubs now, eh?
I for one feel like shit every time I walk by this place. Women are meant to be exploited in this society and I think it sucks that so called progressive portlanders are willing to look the other way when it comes to sexism. WTF is wrong with you people?
24
Alicia, you need to go look up the definition of sexism and come up with a better complaint. Being/looking at attractive people is not sexism. Now, if I was the owner there and constantly told these women how weak they are and will never be promoted or achieve something better because it's a man's world, blah blah, then that would be sexism.

And why is "flaunting it at the club" ok? Shouldn't men being going to book readings and marrying women based on the wholesome intellectual discourse found there, regardless of attire?
25
It's hip to be sexy now? Way to go, Portland. For a "progressive" city you should know that appearing attractive means willingly submitting to SLAVERY. But not male-dominated slavery-- I'm talking about the slavery of the Dark Lord Satan Incarnate. You all must help humanity rise above this disgusting trend of immodesty. Why, if I had my way, you womenfolk would all be wearing modest gingham housedresses and keep your hair long, and cook me a wholesome dinner without complaint. Also, I'd keep about twelve or fourteen of you handy so I can propagate God's flock in modest bliss.

ps: It's NOT a compound!
26
Its sad to think of all the woman who have fought throughout history to be respected as equals are being demeaned by innocently, thoughtless girls in bikinis! They belong on a beach not standing in the business district trying to solicit...coffee.
27
I wonder if they would hire an over-weight woman. Or a pregnant woman. Or a man?
28
What I don't get is how people equate bikini's and demeaning. If you got it, flaunt it. There's nothing demeaning about being beautiful and not afraid of letting the rest of the world know. They're not doing anything illegal. They've got a job and are paying taxes like the rest of us. They willingly choose to work there and they appear to be enjoying their jobs.
29
Ok, he's the owner but still.
30
What, no links???

http://www.komonews.com/news/26962639.html
31
That would be discrimination.
32
Some of these comments are absolutely hilarious. The fact that people get their undies in such a twist over what other people decide to do with their lives never ceases to amaze me. And the fact that the people who are against this particular establishment are the ones who ironically fought so hard to change society that women could feel comfortable working and patronizing a place like this without fear of some religious or sexist nutball walking in with a Molotov Cocktail, or a submachine gun. Ask those protesters if they'd rather live in Saudi Arabia, or Iran, where anything like this place would mean a death sentance for the proprieter AND the women employed there.
33
Okay.

I've decided I just think it's stupid.
34
"I'm actually surprised at the commenters' savvy on this, so far. I'd say last year, there'd have been 50 comments on here by now, all screaming and shouting about it. But now, people are more interested in having "rational discussions," and so on."

[Withdraws comment.]
35
OK! but will they flash for tips?
36
OK! but will they flash for tips?
37
And another thing! The US Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Team should be ashamed... Absolutely ASHAMED of themselves for running around in those skimpy outfits in front of God and everybody! Don't they know they are setting back womyn's rights by at least 60 years? The gall!

I hope they win.
38
this is silly. if you dont like it, dont shop there.
and if we are going to start getting offended over what people wear, I find it offensive when I am walking thru downtown and I see some woman wearing a shirt that shows belly and she obviously has had a 12 pack of beer to many to be wearing something like that. or worse yet, every bike rider in Portland thinks its ok to wear spandex. that is just flippin wrong!
if we are to not be punished by women in bikinis then I say dont punish us by wearing to tight of clothing, not enough clothing, or pieces of clothing that show off rolls of fat! fare is fare
39
Seriously- WHO CARES????
40
JFC what's wrong with all these crazy ass commenters? I didn't realize I was living in a city filled with dumbasses who don't see why this is considered sexism? If you don't like it don't shop there? Kinda sounds like "America, love it or leave it!" How about I don't like my daughter think that this is what women are good for in this country. You people seriously suck some major ass.
41
monkeygirl:

At last, a voice of reason.

I remain,

Jacomus
42
Tara, granted it's sexist. So what. It takes all kinds. Will you shelter your daughter against all influences not in accord with your particular taste? Every inch of this city is crawling with female "types" that don't match your ideal: punks, barbie-dolls, elitest power-bitches, smart-ass self-stroking columnists, snoops and busy-bodies, intollerant mothers with bad grammar, the list goes on. Tollerate, teach, and enjoy.
43
My ex-wife, who is my favorite feminist (seriously, she'll kick your ass if you don't keep it tight), came up with the best bikini business idea years ago. Boob 'n' Lube. ©her. Mechanics! Oil! Free newspaper while you wait! Feminist women can have a sense of humor and realize that the argument of exploitation is subjective.
44
Sexism? Them chick is smokin' hot, yo!
45
I would totally get coffee there if Sermin Yesilada (middle) worked there. She is hawt.
46
Put a strip club in the Michelle's Pianos space - it'll drive them out of business, just like the presence of strip clubs nearby killed two Hooters in the metro area.
47
What's wrong with being sexy?
48
Why can't there be a coffee shop with attractive men in swimming trunks dedicated to all of the women coffee drinkers? Some of us women like eye candy just as much as men do :)
49
I'll take this any day over those aloof bastards at stumptown and their backwards approach to customer service.
50
sassy5, you want cute boy eye candy, check out the starbucks on SW Park and Taylor!
51
I get caffinated at an old, funky dump the owner of which is drop-dead gorgeous. Like a ten + and with fabulous coffee to boot.
52
Banana Hammock Coffee. All three of these stiffs would be there with their tongues hanging out.
53
So, bikini clad barrista's are too horrible to have in the "downtown" core area and get your panties in a bunch but the fact that nude bikers ride through downtown and enjoy their "liberty" to do so doesn't raise an eyebrow from you all??? Take a pill ladies.
54

55
Genderwise, the human animal is very asymmetrical, where men wield absolute power and create fake religions to enslave women. Forcing an islamic woman to wear a hood is the same as forcing a woman to strut her rack in order to have a low-wage job.
Women a baby-making pieces of meat and men a masters of all dominion. Retail titties are a metaphor for patriarchy.
56
"sassy5, you want cute boy eye candy, check out the starbucks on SW Park and Taylor!"

Shit.
57
yea its sexist. But wheres the equal time. I want hunky dudes in skimpy speedos that show off their packages.
Girls buy coffee too!!!!!

i think we need have both then I will be ok with it.
58
I don't care about the bikinis.... the ladies are nice looking, but their coffee is complete shit.
59
There's no disconnect here. The story forgot to mention that these ladies are lactating and they'll squirt a bit right into your mocha if you ask nice.
60
I knew this would cause a stir when the place opened, and it is so nice to know that some things never change. People in Portland will protest anything. I remember years ago when Mr Peeps opened and there was a huge protest predicting doom and gloom by people who would have you believe it wasn't safe to walk past the building because a rapist my jump out of the bushes and stalk you.

For crying out loud, people. They are clothed. And there are sex offenders everywhere.

When will women in general learn that the female body is not to be feared or found offensive but should be appreciated. Or we could all go around wearing Berkas. Who is more sexist? The culture that insists women cover their bodies because they "offend" people or the culture who doesn't try to control others when they are perfectly within their rights to dress as they want?

These girls aren't forced to work where they are. They most likely enjoy it. And yeah, if I had a killer hot body like that, I would show it off, too.

Grow up people. There are sex offenders and pervs everywhere, but I highly doubt sex offenders are just going to hang around outside the business so revved up and horny over seeing girls in a bikini top and shorts that they pounce on unsuspecting business women who happen to walk by. And thanks to this article, I may just go buy a coffee there tomorrow.

61
Those protesters are totally paid to cause a publicity ruckus. When was the last time you saw protesters in Portland dressed so formally (or smiling)? Where are all the angry unemployed punks with actual time on their hands?
And while I don't find anything morally wrong with serving coffee in a bikini, it is pretty insipid. It feels like LA is trying to claw its way up here. I also feel that way about Skinnidip on Burnside where they only hire super skinny tanned girls with perfectly plucked eyebrows.
62
Folks, let me say right off that I am an ethical slut, I'm sure you're familiar with the term. Means I choose sex partners on my own terms based on respect, trust and hormones! Now these two women are young hotties and more power to 'em for that. What makes me wince is why are they using their beautiful physically fit bodies to solicit coffee? Esp. for some guy to make money off them by displaying them like monkeys in a zoo - yukko. Someone said there are visiting sex offenders in the hood and someone else admitted that perverts are everywhere - well, can we arouse them somewhere else please, the poor buggers. I'm not taking my niece to Ross Dress anytime soon. Bodies are for having safe, sane, and consensual sex with...not for soliciting coffee with on the street, for cryin' out loud. Jeez.
63
I'm totally with PRWalters on this, tigers at a lemonade stand would be awesome. You bet your sweet ass I'd buy some lemonade there.
64
do these people understand that the freedom that allows them to protest is the same freedom that allows people to run their own business the way they want? maybe we should protest the protesters. then the original protesters can protest against the protesters protesting against them. HA!
65
Lactators- "Milky mashed potatoes better than Mom used to make!"
66
I am a tenant in this office building. Ms. Orr, to me and most educated adults, "just like Hooters" means sexist and in poor taste. I see no need to protest Hooters' existence, I simply never go there. Likewise, I would never lease an office in a professional office building with a Hooters on the ground floor. But now I have a "just like Hooters" coffee shop on the ground floor of my office building, and it feels unprofessional.

I'm glad you work hard to stay in shape; so do I. But I wear my bikini at the beach, not in a professional office building. It is embarrassing to me that now my clients must pass by scantily clad models to get to my office. From the comments I've heard from my clients so far, they think it's pretty lame, too. When my lease is up, if Bikini Coffee is still here, I'll be finding office space elsewhere.
67
WELL I WILL SAY THIS IF YOU HAVE THE BODY SHOW IT BUT IF YOU ARE NOT FIT THEN COVER IT I WOULD WEAR TIGHT SPANDEX IF I WAS THEM BUT I AM A GUY OUT IN GRESHAM AND I DO WEAR SPANDEX AND THE BLUGE WILL SHOW I DO NOT COVER I AM FIT TO WEAR THEM SO WEAR SPANDEX
68
I WEAR SPANDEX MY BLUGE STICKS OUT SO IF YOU HAVE THE BODY THEN SHOW IT BUT IF YOU ARE FAT COVER IT
69
well i wear spandex they are tight email me at spandex93@yahoo.com
70
TO ALL WOMEN IN PORTLAND OREGON ALL OF FEB AND MARCH IS SPANDEX WEAR YOUR TIGHTS EVERY SATURDAY IN PORTLAND AND GRESHAM OREGON OK?
71
The problem that no one seems to get is that it's ALWAYS the females (I say females, not women), who are catering to the males - we need a balanced society, not a male dominated one. Women are not here to be props or to play the supporting role. Why is it forgotten that we like to look at males yet we don't have males catering to us. These stupid little girls who want to feel empowered by having guys ogle them, are idiots who are selling out the long fight women took to get them where they are. DUMB!
72
No one is saying there's "something wrong with being sexy" - LISTEN UP - what we're saying is that women for eons were relegated to that role on the males terms, not theirs, and they became the literal property of men - they had no rights, weren't taken seriously, and when we finally got some equality, we still don't have the pay or the level of decision making positions or the respect or are being listened to. Why? because men want us to cater to them since they think their sexual titillations are so important. And dumb girls freely give it to them because they're stupid and selfish and get off on having attention from males with not one inkling of the ramifications.

Women have come a long way only to be back at square one. DUMB DUMB DUMB. Why do so many females want all males to desire them? Who the F cares???Gain some self-love, some self-respect and stop selling out women as a whole for your dumbass little whoredom. It's cheap. It lacks class. Do you really want every mentally 12 yr old males ogle your body parts and worse? What the hell????

Be sexy at clubs. Be sexy at home. Be sexy with your friends. But the WORKplace - get a brain!!!

Please wait...
