As myself and several others pointed out in the comments of the first posting, you did NOT "debunk" the fact that cyclists don't pay taxes to maintain the roads they use. It's therefore not a misconception.

While the first article perhaps didn't debunk this misconception (yes, I'm using those words), I think the stats showing that the road money really comes from taxes that everyone pays pretty much DO debunk it.

Will, nice coverage of the coverage. :-) Thanks for getting the different viewpoints in there.

As a biker, I guess I'm on the outside of the group, and would welcome paying a separate, dedicated tax for bikes if it could add to my enjoyment of dedicated bike paths and I didn't have to deal with vehicular manslaughter on a daily basis. Right now the funding is pathetic and why should I pay for cars when I rarely am in one?

Slightly ontopic, Have you seen the private tollways in Colorado near the Denver airport? Some of them don't have a spec of dirt on them, and are meticulous, 24/7/365. That is what I want in my bike utopia fantasy.

Excellent write up. Seriously, one of the most well written unbiased pieces every to come from the Mercury.

I'm not sure I've ever see a stop sign on I-5.
Just sayin... ;-)

That guy in the chicken suit was awesome. Wonder where he is today...

@Kmcdade - that's something I was curious about, and didn't see mentioned in either article here. How ARE the roads paid for? Is it just fuel tax and vehicle registration fees? Or does the budget also come from income tax? Wher are the stats you mentioned?

"Webtrends' attention grab. Clearly not working at all."

You must be 12.

If WebTurds were paying attention, they'd know how tiresome this whole "battle" is. The Oregonian's been milking it for years now.

Stirring up idiots at oregonlive or KATU is no accomplishment-- all it takes is a person with a vaguely Hispanic name being arrested for the nutjobs to come out of the woodwork. They react similarly at any mention of bicycles.

This is a crass grab for attention.

How about never ever ever using comments from other posts on other sites as part of a story?

How about no.

I must be around tech too much. Out of the corner of my eye the graphic for the max train in this story reminds me of a catalyst switch.

Please wait...
