"To me, that sends the signal that Potter will intentionally block out media outlets whose coverage he does not like."

Thanks for the insightful analysis...

You double posted the paragraph that begins with "What this issue is about for me"

Once again, the Merc needs to hire someone to to copy edit the blog posts and do some fact checking. I'm still offering at $32k/anum with a 30-hour work week.

That being said....

When did Mr. Potter forgo his irrelevant status? Old man is old. And writing his letter to Marty Davis and saying, "the sexual and gender minority community has to come together and focus on the bigger challenges of ensuring full civil rights for our community."? Yeah... Right... Marty is really fucking helping the "sexual and gender minority community" these days by being a horrible business-person. This is just a whole fucking trainwreck. We've got Adamas, Davis, Potter and Wurster all in the same post now. YEE-HAW!!!

(confidential to Ms. Hallett: If hired, I will use your fancy elitist comma system.)

"Once again, the Merc needs to hire someone to to (sic) copy edit the blog posts and do some fact checking."

That's not a rousing endorsement.
4
This is D's "Potter, Adam bombshell"? It is more like a flick of sand, it doesn't even rise to the level of throwing a rotten tomato.

@Graham: If they hire me, I'll put in way too many commas. Damn, I love commas.
6
@swammy One is always going to have typo or a mistake when criticizing someone for making those self-same mistakes.
7
@jake What exactly do you mean by "want Portland to be turned into Seattle"?

And didn't you get my ever so clever BSG reference? Really, I was jst comitting the cardinal sin that I'm always railing against. But at least I'm not getting paid for this, they are. Therefore they're worse than me. Like Hitler-esque bad.
8
Why don't you cover the efforts to Re-erect Hung Far Low? Far more interesting than Grampa Potter.
http://reerecthungfarlow.com/
9
Haha. "bone to pick with Adams."
10
FAIL Graham Fuh-AIL.
11
Another correction for Graham: "Hitler-esque" should read "Super Hitler-esque" and "bad" should read "fighting some sort of giant Stalin robot."
12
I love the internet.
13
Matthew D - OK so it may not be a bombshell to many people, but a former mayor calling his predecessor a serial liar who needs to be recalled is a pretty big deal.
14
(I mean successor)
15
I do hereby declare this comments page a typo-paradise. Use this time and space to vent all of your bad bile and blood.

BRING OUT YE TYPOS! BRING OUT YE TYPOS! BRING OUT YE TYPOS! BRING OUT YE TYPOS!
16
@Graham now that we know one another better IRL, I begin to understand your Blogtown Comments in their proper, Churchillian context. Semper fi.
17
Tihs is totaly catjartic.
18
@Spritzfellow BRODIE! Welcome to my troll-fun-palace! How's the lil'Mrs doing? I was just up in your neck last weekend drinking. I should have given you a call, my bad
19
"OK so it may not be a bombshell to many people, but a former mayor calling his predecessor a serial liar who needs to be recalled is a pretty big deal."

When you were as ineffective and worthless as Potter was as a mayor its not a big deal. Potter is more pissed that Sam accomplished about 250% more done in 100 days than old man Potter accomplished in 4 years.
21
"Please give me a list, and make sure it's 250% more. And none of the soccer bullshit, please."

Ok, here's what I've got:
--Improved personal, hands-on outreach to Portland's youth.
--Drew attention to skyrocketing foreclosure rate in Portland.
--Personally interacted with police to illustrate traffic flow problems in an around the Jantzen Beach area.

COME ON. The guy has done a ton! Sheesh, really.
22
I would like to nominate Dave J.'s post for a "Best Of" for the /b/town.
23
I will second.
Don't forget the elevation of Storm Large to Portland arts community spokesperson
24
Yes let’s all just ignore Potter because he’s "old." How dare anyone over the age of 35 even have an opinion? Next people who wear hoodies are going to want to start spouting their opinions...oh wait.

@Jake, Garrett doesn't know anything except soccer bullshit. Soccer bullshit is blinding any sort of rational thought

@ Garrett we get it. You luuuuurve Sam Adams no matter what he does because he supports a sport you enjoy. Everyone who does not support soccer/sam is _____ (insert insult.) You would be more effective if you mixed it up a bit, just say'n.

@ Mercury please give Graham a job, preferably overseas.
25
@Rondine: thank you for calling out on the ageism that the Mercury participates in, as well as many Mercury readers. Sly comments aimed at a guy because of his age ("woke up from his nap", etc) is crap, considering the righteous diversity line that the Mercury pretends to respect (and yes - comments like that are directed at the age before they are the man). No matter what you think of Potter, it's not cool to beat up on someone because of their age.
26
If I'm not mistaken, the nap comments stem not from Potter being old, but from him actually falling asleep during some official function. Am I mis-remembering this? The google is not being my friend right now.
27
@Dignified, ageism indeed. Apparently the righteous diversity crap only extends to people still living in the PSU Dorms.

This blog is written with incredible arrogance that implies only the opinions of the young matter. Huh? Last I checked Portland is pretty diverse in regards to age.
29
I'm with Jake on this one. Mirk, can you tell us how Adams, the hero-of the neophytes, somehow transcends all mayors who have come previously? Potter was certainly a bump on a log but, I'm of the opinion that after 12 years of Katz, Portland was looking for a break. Too bad the break was a pretty fuckin' lame. But to view Adams through the now typical messianic, knee-jerk PC paradigm as the greatest thing to hit town since sliced bread just plain sucks shit through a tube.
Come the fuck on, Mirk. You're smarter than that.
Just don't be afraid to ditch the party line.
30
@Rondine your complaints about backfat and love of all things West Linn means you don't matter in a discussion about Portland. Please enjoy the suburbs and go figure out who your mayor is so you can yammer at him.

Anyway boring...here is the list

-created a 5 year plan to create jobs and strengthen local business
-Created a climate action plan to reduce carbon consumption to 80% below 1990 levels.
-Restructured PDC and bureau of housing to ease permitting.
-Created Act for Art
-Earmarked 500K for bike projects (never been done before)
-Portland Is Better Together
-etc...

I learned from Tom Potter though. I thought Jim Francesconi was a tool of big business and voted against him because of that. What I learned is when you elect morons with no ideas that really don't know how to navigate city politics nothing gets accomplished in 4 years. Much like what would have happened had Sho "the Mumbler" Dozono been elected. Lesson learned.

Typical Portland though. When someone actually makes something happen Portlanders bitch about it constantly because there wasn't enough process or they weren't paying enough attention to the process and wanted to come back to it because they feel wronged they weren't smart enough to be paying attention in the first place. Portlanders would love to stick 5 of Amanda Fritz on city council. It would be funny to watch but hard to pay attention because unemployment would probably be around 40% and city council would still be talking about if it was a good idea or not to create the Pearl District or leave it as a nice place to buy crack and get knifed.
31
You are only as old as you act. Nelson Mandela turns 91 on Saturday and nobody is accusing him of "waking up from his nap." It isn't "ageism" here, it is "uselessism."

In any case, after the guy refused to give the Mercury an interview, but did give the story to other papers in town, you expect that the Mercury is going to write a glowing story about him? What planet are you from?
33
@jake

Yes I do like soccer. Bottom line...

Bill Clinton - Committed a crime and lied under oath about a blowjob. Did a good job at being President.

George W. Bush - didn't lie under oath. Killed a lot of people. Did a crappy job of being President.

Sam Adams - Did not lie under oath about having sex with an adult male human being. He lied to a crappy alt-weekly reporter who was asking about his personal life. Committed no crimes. Effective mayor.

Tom Potter - Never lied under oath. Shitty do nothing mayor who wasted everyone's time. Crotchety.

I don't care about someone's personal life. Soccer plays no factor. Sorry to disappoint.
35
Adams is an asshole, with a capital A-S-S-H-O-L-E. that said, he's the best option we have a present, and IS getting more accomplished than Potter ever dreamed up. Dozono would've been Potter cubed.

Potter/Dozono = nice guys but ineffective politicians

Adams = vindictive/bullheaded/lying asshole but fairly effective mayor (especially given his "issues" of late)

also - i'm middle-age + person and think you young ageist bastards should just GET OFF MY LAWN!

Please wait...
