Is she a union member? Is there now a union at the facility?

Hi D,

She was a union member - there is a union forming at the facility but its recruiting efforts essentially froze after Lehr was fired.

"promises that managers would not interrogate employees about union activity, would not prevent employees from coming to the facility on their off hours to promote unionization and would not threaten to call police to have employees arrested who do so."

Aren't they required by labor laws not to do that anyway? I feel like promising to act in a basically humane manner isn't much of a compromise on their part. I hope Lehr got a fat check, because otherwise that's not much of a deal.

Nice work, Sarah!

The Portland Mercury should get their facts straight...Lehr was a receptionist. If they aren't even able to correctly report her position at Laurelhurst, who's to say the rest of their "facts" are facts at all.

Nurse or Receptionist? This article says both I guess that's possiable. Its my understanding that she was a receptionist. Please clarify.

She was a receptionist. The notices are actually really helpful because a lot of people don't actually know their rights, and when management messes with people for union activity other people see it and say ooook I cannot afford to lose my job/ get messed with/ handle the stress of supervisors breathing down my neck. It's also just an incredibly powerful symbolic message that they did not get away with breaking the law. I mean, they are continually getting away with breaking the law, as we speak, but at least it's in the open now that yes, they were in fact breaking the law. I've noticed a huge difference in how much more open people are now to talk about it. Unfortunately a lot of the old bull shit is still present, but that's why we need to get a contract.

Please wait...
