No Rex, what's stupid is you pretending to be a "green" politician while supporting global warming-inducing transportation policies that subsidize single-occupancy vehicle commuting from Vancouver into Portland. Really stupid.
2
It was "stupid" to commit that much money to a project with so many flaws and so little public support.

What is "sensible" and "pragmatic" now is to go back to the drawing board to find a smarter, affordable bridge design that helps advance regional transportation and environmental goals while improving the commuting experience through better bike infrastructure and a light rail connection.

1) Rex is stupid.
2) What is really stupid is to commit to $4.2B because otherwise you have to admit the $80M was wasted. It is that sort of thinking that has kept us in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, see #1.
3) They aren't advocating throwing everything away anyways, or at least not until they "flesh out that idea for a little while." See #1.

I was at the towards car free cities conference last year and Rex was one of the speakers at lunch time. Unlike the other speakers which were quite good, people generally ignored his speech and just talked to each other. That was until QA time when someone asked pretty much why they'd even bothered to invited him to speak at the conference at all given his support for the CRC, and the audience cheered.

"towards car free cities conference" Man, I wish I'd heard about that one. Would have started a fire and barred the door.

Two questions:
1) Would any of these five groups advocating a new study perhaps hope to be involved somehow, maybe get a bit of that $4 million? Hmmm, I wonder.

2) They know the results they want, why spend $4 million on a fake study? Just sit down and write it themselves this weekend? There's been $80 million in studying and planning, but since that returned the wrong facts, we should just keep trying until we get the "facts" we want, right?

What I want more than anything is for someone in Salem or Olympia, who are paying vastly more for this project than Portland, to tell self-important local little fleas to STFU because they have zero influence and their views are infantile and irrelevant.

"You really really like bikes? That's cute, dear. But the grown-ups are talking about how interstate commerce works. Why don't you go organize a fun ride with your little friends? Then meet up at HUB to play your little 'we're changing the world' make believe game."
5
Interstate commerce is great, but funding sucks are less so. Another study seems like throwing good money after bad at this point. Vancouver isn't going to support a toll, and, short of burning the whole joint down, we cannot force them to not want to work here.

I'm sure there will be other bridge projects in the future, but it's time to pack this one in and focus on the bridges we have now, which are not in especially good shape.

When people realize that the bridge isn't the problem, maybe something good will happen. The problem lies with I-5 through Portland. Fix that, and guess what, what's left will be inconsequential. Until then, you can keep throwing money at the bridge, and nothing will improve. All you people who complain about Washingtonians working in Oregon should stop and realize how much is paid to Oregon every year in income taxes by the Washington workers.
