Leavitt is an idiot if he actually thinks this idea is going to fly.
2
I propose, "Little Jersey".
3
How about "Couve Town"
4
And now another entry for "Vacouver" trickles into Google's mighty search index.
5
Somehow I think most adults are capable of grasping that both Canada and the State of Washington have cities named "Vancouver". Did you guys know that there is a Portland Maine? What should we change our name to?
6
Ok, how about "Meth Valley"
7
Vangresherton
8
You guys need to realize that there are Oregonians commuting to the Vancouver area also, so they would be exempt along with Washington residents. And to be fair about it, Oregon should stop taking income tax from Washington residents that work in Oregon. And I think you will see the sales tax exemption for Oregon residents go away.
9
I live in PDX and commute to Vancouver for work. It's not ideal, but Vancouver is actually a cool spot.
10
Vancouver is Portland's Tijuana...Just cross the border to purchase real Sudafed and a chance to pump your own gas.
11
Maybe if over the past 30 years or so, Vancouver had been focused on actually creating a great city, instead of a cheap housing, auto-oriented, strip mall laden sprawlville that's like 1,000 other bedroom communities in America, they would have something to toot their horn about?

Kinda like Vancouver, BC and Portland do.
12
dimaq, do you really know anything about Vancouver at all? Ever stopped there? Let me guess? Moved to Portland in the last three years?

If they want free they can use the Glenn Jackson bridge. In fact, if we just put a toll on the existing bridge, perhaps we won't need to build a new one as the day trippers will change their driving habits.

And I thought we already changed the name to Vantuckey.
14
Well Ms. Mirk, if only the people who use a bridge should pay for it, then why not pay for the Sellwood Bridge with a toll? Why should the 90% of Multnomah County residents who never use the bridge have their car registration fees jacked up to pay for the bridge? It's not like the I-5 bridge is major part of the West Coast's transportation system or anything. Connecting Lake Oswego and SE Portland is so much more important.
15
I thought everybody already called it Vantucky.
16
Portlanders can be so arrogant. How much of Oregon's tax revenue comes from Vancouver residents giving up an extra 10% of their income to work in Oregon and fund the state system? It's not a trivial amount. So they should be charged daily to go to work as well? That's the scenario Leavitt is trying to avoid, and good for him. He's trying to protect his citizens. And that is not an unreasonable proposal at all.

Not to mention the importance of I-5 to west coast transportation and shipping. I know its hard to wrap your heads around, but the I-5 bridge isn't just for Vancouver commuters, so why should they foot the bill?

17
Washington state should figure out some way to charge an income tax on out-of-staters that work in Washington. Let's see how soon the howls of indignation start.

Vancouver - Our bikes have gears and brakes!

Vancouver - Like Portland, but half the hipsters, half the price!

Please wait...
