It seems to be getting more and more common, Number Six.
I've known Jesse not long, but he's certainly a bright, imaginative and articulate guy with a definite sense of himself and his leadership. I look forward to watching him campaign and hearing his ideas.
His analysis of the need for police oversight--by shifting discussion to a case that no one (even the union) could object to--seems to raise the question whether he sees oversight as a real issue or just as a would-be politician's lip synching of the debate topic du jour. This ploy is especially troubling when he supposedly had a friend killed in an excessive force incident. If that doesn't do it for him, what would? He's got to do a lot better than this if he really means it.
I've known Mr. Cornett for over a decade and he is not paying lip service. He has more than the requisite knowledge (experience is a part of knowledge), skills, and abilities (ethics and integrity are abilities) to be an effective City Commissioner. As J Renaud stated: "the sh*t hit the fan" when Jesse entered the race. I concur. Vote Cornett in May 18, 2010!
So, this gentleman had a friend killed in 2005 and 4 years later he decides to run for office to do something about it. Is it a post traumatic stress reaction or opportunity knocking?
To quote Mr. Cornett from an interview for his failed state senate seat run in 2006: "...I was supposed to be staffing (Bradbury) for a rotary lunch and a couple of high school visits and I found someone to cover for me that day so I could be in the capitol because it was filing deadline, and there's lots of politicos around and a lot of connections to make..." (http://www.mydd.com/story/2006/4/1/132332/…) Never miss a good opportunity to schmooze!
IS this opportunity knocking or a recently acquired cause? After all, Mr. Cornett did take an unexpected run at a power seat at the table with the Democratic Party only to leave for greener pastures at PSU not too long ago.
A scant 3 months ago, Mr. Cornett was toying with the idea of moving to House District 46 to unseat Mike Schaufler. That time it was his environmental sensibilities that were calling him. (http://wweek.com/editorial/3543/13016/)
Let's add another 30 something, white male, Bus Project clone into the mix. But this time with a police accountability spin instead of a Democratic Party leadership or environmental cause du jour.
Cornett talks about the PGE Park remodel. Obviously I've been pretty for it.
Not to draw a line on something like that but I have a serious question. The kind of thing like a guy wanting to do something big in Portland comes along very rarely. If Cornett wants to sit on council what is he going to do when something else rare comes along? It isn't always sports. The economy is shit. We all know that. Personally I think our council has done a pretty good job of tackling a lot of issues. All in all the PGE think is about $11 million dollars in public financing, which is chump change in a city budget.
I guess my real question is: Let's say the economy doesn't rebound but some dude wants to roll in and build a bunch of stuff. It doesn't really matter what. Obviously sports is a hot button issue but what if its some transportation thing? It could be good or not. It doesn't really matter. So is Cornett willing to talk about it or not?
The whole PGE thing aside. He is bitching they spent some time talking about something that literally could be very good for the region. It may be a slim risk but probably is a pretty good bet in the long run. Obviously some people hate it.
So is Cornett saying he's going to bitch about potholes and the children because he wants to satisfy every constituent this side of the Willamette?
Big things happen once in a while. It sucks the whole MLS PGE thing happened while the economy was crap but what if something else big happens? I personally applaud city council for taking it up and I doubt it consumed their time and it most definitely didn't cost any jobs. So is he saying he wouldn't even talk to a business man who comes in and wants something to make something big happen because he's worried about potholes and the children?
All politics aside. If he can't balance something like a PGE remodel proposition along with generating jobs he can piss off. He has no place on city council. The reality is that we can all love the children, try and fix the potholes, generate jobs, but there is more to it. It's a nice talking point to a lot of Portland to bitch and moan about the streetcar or the tram but in the big scheme of things it's nothing. It's a nice talking point I guess. Cornett's resume is nice though. I'm just saying there is more to it that bitching about something like the PGE remodel. It may play well in the media though...we'll see how well of a campaign tactic it is. Personally I don't think Saltzman is going to run again. Just a hunch.
Hey Jasun what's up? You have a screen name. Why have you quit using it? You have certain tells in the way you write. You also consistently misspell my name.
Anyway...fact is it's a double standard. I was inquiring to know one thing. I received a message on Facebook from the save the Made in Oregon coalition. This was their statement.
"Jesse Cornett was behind the scenes helping to Save the Made in Oregon Sign (update below)."
It's sort of a double standard right? One can assume that Cornett would have wasted a bunch of time saving a sign that consistently costs thousands of dollars a month with no prayer to recover the money instead of spending the time creating jobs.
I actually supported saving the sign. I'm just sort of wondering where the consistency is. What is OK to talk about that isn't creating jobs and economic development and what is a waste of time.
Given that this fellow moved into the neighborhood in September of this year, I take issue with him trying to claim that he's a Lents resident. I have seen him at zero events or meetings, and is sounds as if his opinion of the neighborhood is informed by what/who seems (and I stress the "seems") politically convenient and easy to manipulate. In other words, he's a carpetbagger - at least as far as his residency in Lents is concerned.
Interesting comments, all. I have been a Portlander my entire adult life. I've lived in downtown (during college), NW, outer NE, Irvington, and Rose City Park. When my wife and I decided on where we wanted to be long term, we chose Lents. It's a great neighborhood and we're proud to call it our home. Note, I'm running for a city wide office. I'll be proud to represent Lents, every other neighborhood I've lived in and all that I haven't.
Jasun, remember, you're the ONLY Jasun Wurster in the world right? LOL. Your facebook page, remember?
You and Mary seem like such shameless spotlight hounds. She is not the kind of person who should be leading anyone in the city of Portland. She is too volatile, too much of, as she says on her interesting little facebook page, "an amazing... risk taker"
I will offer my support of some of the other contenders for Saltzmans seat, who really deserve some attention and support, but certainly not her. She has no background and no experience with the kinds of issues that would warrant her taking his position.
However, I do have to say this. You're...so, well, you're so cute, the way you trail her, fight for her, and allow her to use you as her tireless workhorse. Gee, wish I had someone as devoted as you, so willing to serve and be used.
Looks like Sam has unleashed the big guns on Wurster for giving him the visual smack down in front of the Portland building today and making Sam look like an ass in front of other politicos.
Looks like the gloves are off kids and Beebobs Junior just upped the stakes... where will it end... Molotov cocktails... who knows? Except the Merc will report!
I'm very aware that the Portland City Council positions are not specific to any sub-geography within the City of Portland. And, I'm very glad your "proud" to have purchased a house in Lents, and that you think our neighborhood is "great" - although I would prefer to know why you think the neighborhood is great rather than just have a positive adjective assigned. You'll have to be a lot less obtuse to get any support from people who actually spend time learning about issues and appreciate candidates that examine the complexities associated with difficult processes like economic development, job creation, managing a responsible police force, and city building - which includes things like financing and constructing publicly owned sports venues and other facilities that require capital funding.
I'm sure you'll find enough people down by the fried pie stand (mmm fried pie) who will pay five dollars just because they hear "police bad, think about the children, trees are good, kittens, puppies, ice cream!" So, good luck with that. I hope you get a web site up, that includes a substantial platform on more complex issues, and prove me wrong - but I'm not holding my breath.
Your comment makes it obvious that you have worked on campaigns before and have direct experience with how the stresses of being on the campaign trail affect a candidate's family.
After you worked enough campaigns it is fairly common for volunteers and family members to have feelings you mention. Which I makes me guess that you already have a vested interest in the Seat 3 race.
Might I suggest attacking family members of the candidate (which you did) will not do any favors for your candidate (or you professionally).
My only hope is that you are not one of those *rumored* City employees having lunches with retired City employees about how the IP span 209.162.223.* has been blocked.
Granted. *if* Matt ever has any spare time or a free intern to see how many overtly political postings from any host with an IP originating from the above IP span... then get a FOIA request for the gateway logs to trace back to see who's bureaus were posting during work time from City resources for political purposes... now that would be an interesting story, don't ya think Beebobs Junior?

Saltzman has In-Kinds for an office and had paid to get telephone lines:
https://secure.sos.state.or.us/eim/cneSearch.do?cneSearchButtonName=search&cneSearchFilerCommitteeId=5718
Saltzman has updates his Statement of Organization to read:
" 2010 Primary Election City Commissioner, City of Portland, Position 3 "
https://secure.sos.state.or.us/eim/sooDetail.do?sooRsn=46980
The real question is when is Garret going to quit bitching, get off of his ass and run for office?
Anyway...fact is it's a double standard. I was inquiring to know one thing. I received a message on Facebook from the save the Made in Oregon coalition. This was their statement.
