I liked Rachel Cusk's Last Supper. And I know that this book came out a few years ago, but Didion's Year of Magical Thinking was my favorite book I read this year. Amazing.
Yeah, this made me realize that most of the books I've read this year were not particularly current. Chronic City, Boilerplate and The Women are the 2009 books that come to mind.
Chronic City: Yes. It's hard to recommend the other two though, because you have to have to not be completely sick of steampunk or TC Boyle (respectively) to enjoy them, and that's probably not everyone these days.
The non-fiction (and non current) book I had the most fun with this year was The Trouble With Tom. It's a history nerd boner in between two covers.
