Aw. I was down at Pioneer Place yesterday and truly shocked at how low the occupancy was. I think seeing the now-vacant Guess store really drove it home for me.

Not looking forward to seasonal shopping trips to Seattle. Sales tax FTL.
2
I never could afford to shop there anyway but they had really nice restrooms.
3
Is this at all surprising? This is Portland, not LA.

Hipsters don't shop at Saks!
4
H&M needs a place to rent, why not the saks location?
5
i thought the Oregonian mentioned something about that already Michael... Hey look at us... taking over the Mercury forum too.

Pug life...

Saks has been a non-issue for the majority of Portlanders since it opened. It's hard to be relevant when you sell a plain cotton tee-shirt for EIGHTY dollars.

I would like to forsee a time when all the empty buildings downtown and elsewhere are converted into affordable housing, but that's as much of a pipe-dream as redistribution of resources.

Saks? Whatever.

hurry up and play, it's your turn on words

we have the internet presence of giants

Come on down to the 'affordable housing' blocks in SW and in Old Town humbug. And bring plenty of smokes, spare change and disinfectant.
You have no reason to be there however, since all the businesses are closed and left town.
But you do get to pay for parking on Sundays.

D -

Generally those of us who live Downtown have little need for cars/parking. We're either cyclists, pedestrians, Trimet users, or Zipcar users.

Or, like my household, we use a combination of the four methods of transportation to get around.

The "businesses that have left town" are not the big businesses in which we walk to work at M-F, so we're actually doing pretty well, contrary to your belief.

You don't have to give the "homeless" Nebraskan (or Lake Oswegan) kids that have left Mommy and Daddy's McMansion to try and get back at them if you don't want to, either.
10
We have a parking lot under our building and although we do have a car, I haven't driven it in over 3 weeks.

Downtown is an excellent place to live and the hobos are really very nice to my dogs.

I've lived in downtown the entire time I've been in Portland (only about 3 1/2 years, but still) and absolutely hate the lack of things to do past, like, 6 or 8pm. Most of the food carts, restaurants, and businesses work too much to cater to either the students at PSU, or the 9-5 worker bees. There are only a handful of bars that are open and at least half of them suck as well, outside of the little pocket of nightlife around Burnside/Old Town/inner SW. Another thing that D may be on to up there- most of the businesses and such that ARE open, like the aforementioned Saks, are way out of the price range of most of the people that live down here. Not to mention all of the development towards making this community a truly sustainable one (i.e. one you can raise your family in) are focused on the Pearl which ironically is the least family-oriented community in Portland. The rest of what's inside the I-405 loop is filthy, sometimes dangerous, overpriced, and dead. And, as mentioned, impossible to own a car which some (if not most) of us need and is really much, much more affordable than owning a Zipcar and more convenient than taking transit everywhere. If I want or need to drive sometimes to go to the beach, mt. hood, Seattle, or what have you, I don't want to have to pay $250 A MONTH (I lucked out and "only" had to pay $82 a month to park at PSU when I did own a car) just to park my car and not use it for days at a time. Zipcar only looks more affordable in comparison to that ripoff. That's unlike the other communities that are close-in like Goose Hollow and inner NW where you can get a parking permit for $30/year if you have proof of residence. Never understood why they didn't bother with that for people who live in downtown.

Thankfully, I just applied this week for a nice apartment off NW 21st which costs less and has way more going on at all times of day, and with grocery stores that don't suck awful shit like the "Psycho Safeway" at 11th and Jefferson.
12
Yeah, losing Saks but getting an "Off-5th" at Bridgeport (which is what the Oregonian is reporting) actually seems like good news overall for this readership, if not for downtown and Pioneer Mall.
13
el cubano - I totally LOL'ed @ "Psycho Safeway!" My wife's been accosted there twice by crazies! Keeps things interesting while looking for good produce, though.
14
Yes, now if Safeway actually HAD good produce!
15
I am in a way not at all shocked at all, Department stores are closing up left and right since the 1990's. I bet sears will be gone by 2020.Department stores are not like what they once were

So good to hear a Saks is closing. You should close the East Coast store in Greenwich. Snobby people making minimun wage acting like they are better than everyone else. HR is snobby. They are condescending. They act like they live in this beautiful upscale town but they live in the freaking Bronx.

I worked at SAKS in CT and quit after two weeks. I was sexually assaulted and harrassed and then they have the nerve to ask if i was in the wrong bathroom. What the fcuk does that have to do with anything. I was taken advantage of in the bathroom and i should have sued their ass for what they said but i quit instead.

Mr. Ceo you sound like a looser get a real job you superficial ahole. Get one where your really helping people in need.

I am so glad to hear SAKS is closing. Id rather shop at Neimun Marcus or Nordstrom. I worked at SAKS for two weeks and quit. Why because i was sexually assaulted and harrassed in the bathroom. HR asked if i was in the wrong bathroom. What does that have to do with anything. FCUK them. I should have sued there ass for what they did.

HR in Greenwich are also condescending, uneducated loosers who freaking live in the Bronx and act like they live in Greenwich when I am the one from that area.

Get a real job Mr. CEO you sound like a loser with no morals. Get a job where ur really helping people.

Looking forward to See Saks in CT close down. Rudest, paranoid people ive encountered especially in HR.
