Jesus, what a sad story. Poor Jackie. At least he's not in any pain anymore. R.I.P., trooper. :(
2
By they way, superb reporting, Sarah.

SM:
Speaks volumes about the immovable solidarity amongst street people , who would not otherwise except in thes circumstances dare to trust anyone (and for valid survival reasons) while it is also a testament to your ethical character that you a hipster stranger (let alone a reporter) could make a 'cold call' visit to that island of compassion (St. Francis evening soup Kitchen) cultivate an of good Samaritan instant authentic rapport with typically reticent folks , thus allowing them to publicly eulogize their brother-in-arms.

Kudos BIG TIME Smirk- may be be your VERY BEST Merc work to date, and not only b/c you GOT THE 'GET' BY competitively scooped the rest of the pack.

Is Sisters doling a good by?

This said, none of the above changes my opinion that once again the PDX cowboy police cowardly overreacted and did their typically piss poor, class biased knee jerk threat assessment - disconnected from objective reality.

And uop nest folks: 20 comments from anonymous police and the pedal-pumpin' women who love and defend them.

I hate to break it to the folks here, but this might not be the best story to try and reinforce the 'jackbooted Portland facists' narrative. The fact is there was a bloody, knife-wielding crazyman rushing a police officer. This isn't a 13-year old girl getting beanbagged at close range. This isn't a guy getting shot in the midst of complying with cops.

Unless some other contrary facts come to light, this affair sounds pretty straightforward. Unfortunate, but straightforward.

where do you get "rushing"? how about "knife wielding"? were you on the scene Yarbog? being as the police have not released the information yet, it seems a bit to premature to say anything yet about what he was doing with what .
there is no report made yet, no way to decide what has happened... yet another good reason for the police to detain and interview officers the same day as a death... probably with a UA involved.
thanks
Patrick

"Yarbog" are you drinking PoPiggie Kool-Aid? Too much of that stuff will distort your thinking (assuming, of course, that your have the ablity) and make ya a nasty person...mean-spirited, vile 'n' vicious, and prone to spouting rightwing fundaloonie silliness heard at Tea Parties! tsk! tsk!

May the dear soul rest in peace! His walk on the Earth was surely hard and difficult, and having a serious mental illness (cutting is indeed a very serious illness) had to have made it all the more harder, coupled with alcohol (which no doubt started out as "self medication") and it was like being in a double curse! He did not deserve to die in the manner he did...from the hands of an ill-trained PoPo who values "instant & exact obedience" to his "authority" over that of human life itself. We should all pause for thought and remembrance of this man and wish for him God's Mercy.

As a "liberal" I'd like to recall the primary difference between "rightwing nutjobs" at times like this, the libs recall the old adage "there but by the Grace of God go I" while the RW nutjobs spout vile judgment on a man they knew now. In closing, let us remember that God is far more superior judge of man than the vicious rightwing fundaloonie nutties!

Agreed. Smirk got the story we waited for.

Hey yarbog . If I had a can of mace , a taser , a knight stick (or retractor) and was confronted by a 58 year old poor , lost , mentaly unstable soul with a box cutter I should :

A. Do everything in my power to help this man
B. Shoot until he no longer moves

If you think the copper had no other choice , I feel sorry for you . These guys are waiting for the opportunity to blow someone away and wear it like a badge of honor . Killing should be the very last option . Does it sound like he exhausted all other options ?
12
Either way you look at it, it's still tragic.
13
So sad, great story.
14
I agree with everyone else above - sad story and a great article.

But PDX Oddball? The answer is B. Don't attack me with a boxknife. I'm not going to take on ANY risk for you - I've got a family to go home to tonight.

Since, in the midst of all this no one has taken ten seconds to Google "How to disarm a man with a boxcutter", I just did and this was the first hit:

http://www.tauntongazette.com/news/x1224405918/Off-duty-officer-disarms-man-who-threatened-him-with-box-cutter

go-figure.

Hey Reymont . If you signed up to be a cop , that is your job . You agreed to take the risk . Your job is to help the people that need it and not to exact your own justice . Jackie obviously needed help . Not 4 bullets . There is a time and place to take a life and this wasn't it . If you can't see that your no better than the Popigs .

I have personally known three people who they killed who were neither armed nor a danger to anyone, including JimJim and Jon Bechtel (one of the two founders of Le Bistro Montage, whose death no one seemed to pick up on). Jon was picked up on Burnside after having a bit too much to drink (he was a peaceful drunk too) and put into a cell after being beaten by the cops. They didn't check on him until the next day and he had died of internal injuries. He was a wonderful guy, just like JimJim. The depressed and the mentally ill cannot get any real help in this country. I don't think the Health Care Bill is going to address the homeless, is it? The Portland Police need to be stopped. Remember in 1981 when two PPO's threw four dead opossums in front of an African American-owned restaurant? After being fired, it was excused as an "ill-advised prank" and they were reinstated with back pay. Almost 30 years ago. And Portland is considered "progressive". Give me a fucking break.
18
@PDX Oddball - Nope, they don't. You made up that job requirement after watching too many Saturday morning cartoons, but it's got nothing to do with reality. Cops don't have any more duty to absorb injury than a meter maid or a county clerk or any other public employee. They aren't your punching bag.
19
Hey reymont .
Have you ever served your country .

RIP JACKIE
