Yeah I watched about 5 seconds of that.

Anyway, I could personally give a shit about the NSFW issue because it isn't an issue for me at work, but there's no "supposedly" about photos of topless chicks - that's NSFW.*

You guys are supposed to be entertaining people surreptitiously while they're at work, and in that way, you're subverting their lame workplaces. Getting people in trouble or fired because you're too lazy to insert a jump (and then justify it by saying "tough. your employers should just magically be cool with this or you should find another job) kind of violates that, don't you think?

* And don't give me any art bullshit; it's clear from Alison's interview that even the "artist" barely considers this book art. Besides, those sort of nuanced distinctions usually aren't very popular in disciplinary meetings.

"You guys are supposed to be entertaining people surreptitiously while they're at work, and in that way, you're subverting their lame workplaces."

Actually, we're not "supposed" to be doing anything other than providing people with news and entertainment, and last time I checked, we're not forcing anyone to read us at their stifling workplaces. Also I'm not really interested in changing the way we do things to please some of our readers' HR departments. However, that being said, we'll try to take these people's feelings into consideration when its appropriate, if the rest of you guys will promise to stop endlessly nagging me like my ex-wife. DEAL?

Humpy:

I really appreciate you taking the time to move the 80085 past the jump. I realize my work (and a lot of others) has some very draconian web practices. As much as I don't like it, it's a job and it happens to be MY job to police it (they call me the Net Nazi...ja).

That all being said, even if you don't in the future make it a point to keep NSFW imagery off the main blog blurbs, I can always use AdBlock to just block that one image so it's not a big deal for me. I honestly don't understand why all the outrage occurred.

But I do appreciate your willingness to help. :)

It's not nagging and it's not about feelings. If you would stop being a piss ant for one second and realize that if employers start blocking the Merc (which they will do if you continue to post nudity), you'll begin to lose readers. There are block lists that many employers subscribe to. All it takes is for the companies that provide those lists to see tits on the home page (which are there now, BTW) and blam! Instant blocking by hundreds if not thousands of companies. I think it's stupid. You think it's stupid. Unfortunately, the goddamned country is run by corporations and their lawyers.

But go ahead, continue with your obstinate attitude if you must. We're just trying to provide feedback on something that nearly everyone agrees on.

AH-HA! It's just what I suspected: Suburban Porn King is my ex-wife! Look dear, you got the Camaro in the settlement. Now will you PUH-LEEEZE climb down off my ass??

1. You're not supposed to be reading this at work. You're supposed to be working. Even places thta let you surf on your break expect you to keep it clean, and a paper that regularly drops f-bombs is a no brainer. If you are (as I am) then stand up and take your lumps for being naughty when the titties and tacos are shown.
2. That kid scares the shit out of me. 40 years from now not changing my diaper on time will be the least of his affronts.
7
God, how many teeth does that kid have?

My suggestion is simply this: Stop reading Blogtown and start reading The Stranger, which Blogtown siphons material from anyway.

Sure, you won't get very many local bloggings there, but how often does Blogtown actually post local items anyway? Three-to-four times a day?

The Stranger:

They've got actual writers, who do actual analyzing!
There's interesting discussions (more often, at least)!
They're considerate of people having typical, strict jobs!

And I conclude with this: Lindy West and Dan Savage vs. ..who writes for The Merc again?

Sarah Mirk!

@ Santos: How did you comment here if you are too good for this rag? WHY DON'T YOU STOP READING BLOGTOWN, OKAY?

This thread is silly. We all must be really, really bored at work today.
11
How do you know what I'm supposed to be doing at work, spartacus? They don't care about f-bombs.

Humpy, I'll get over it. But the outrage stems from this happening numerous times before. Considering it resolved. Thanks.

@ Santos -

Seattle is a flaming pile of poo and they can take their rag and shove it. I would probably choose to live in fucking Denver sooner than I would Seattle.

But thanks for posting on Blogtown (and thus, supporting our fabulously awesome local news site).
13
Oh, and what Reymont said. Sarah Mirk.
14
Patrick Alan Coleman!

...Anyone? Um, anyone?
15
Sorry, PAC. I like all the writing I see here. My vote for Sarah didn't have much to do with any of your writing capabilities.

Obviously you haven't seen the sweet rump steak I'm packing in these jeans. Talk about NSFW. wOOt!
17
Eww.
18
I like Matt, I can forgive him even when he tries to make my head explode.
19
@Suburban Porn King: Are you really making the argument that the Merc should practice self-censorship to prevent them being censored by draconian employers? Pfffftt. Stop being such a slave.

While I sympathize for those of you with shitty bosses and clueless HR departments, it's your problem.

Merc, keep the boobies coming. My boss doesn't mind.
20
Also, while it's a big love-fest, I'll throw in a vote for Matt. Despite the meager salary I'm sure you guys pay him, he seems to have a genuine desire to report like an actual reporter. And he's way less creepy than Busse...

I like PAC best of all.
Get off our blog, Santos, you stranger ass licker.
Porn king, whatever your job is, where they encourage you to browse the internet on the clock, I want to work there. But I sure wouldn't want to be an investor.

Please wait...
