I think my theory that the so called "sideways universe" is actually the future is gaining more ground with last night's episode. I'm guessing whatever they do to get off the island causes them to be reset to the initial plane turbulence time & wipes their memories "Men In Black" style. This would also explain why Desmond runs over Locke, since he knows that it's actually Smokey in the wheel chair.
I think Walt is going to be forgotten about , unless they were smart and filmed scenes with him 5 years ago to use in the final. The actor has matured too much for him to return without some major explaining to do.
As for the creepy kid in the woods, my best guess is that's the reincarnation of Jacob. Maybe it is required that he mature before he can oppress Smokey, and keep him on the island. That would explain why Smokey is in such a hurry to leave.
