Is this about you or Westerman?
2
Fair question for both of us.

Good. Good on Westerman. He's ahead of the curve, which is what leaders are all about.

We don't want faultless leaders. We want leaders who, when mistakes are made, understand them, acknowledge them, learn from them and make amends and changes, inform their peers and subordinates, take a deep breath, and move forward.

The ability to learn from mistakes is an important earmark of leadership.

@ Jason -

I agree with you for the most part BUT...

This happened in late January. If I truly were to believe Westerman's apology and that he had changed for the better, it would have been because he came out with the story himself rather than waiting for the media to report on it, then offer his apology and public comments.

For now I think he's only sorry he "got caught".

I think Jackattak's right. This is just a standard "We are taking this very seriously" announcement.

Then there is Westerman. Sorry about his personal problems, life is hard, his job is hard, but he should have taken some of that ubiquitous family leave before he started on his road rage rampage. Who knows how many other people he has treated this way, I cannot believe the two incidents are the only ones, especially given the attempted cover up by the first dispatcher who 'could not find his plate'.

James Chasse had his ribs broken in over 20 places, and this supposedly sweet misunderstood guy Westerman put together a protest with t-shirts celebrating the cop that did the killing after he had been involved in yet another questionable incident. If our police want to be trusted again they need to stop defending the worst offenders, and Westerman is the poster boy for the PPB's anything goes attitude with respect to police misconduct.

I want to trust our police, I don't blame Walters for the Collins shooting even though I feel it could have been handled better, but I refuse to believe that there is not a single cop who deserved to be fired for James, Chasse, or Campbell. The cops need to realize that just as being shot in the line of duty is a risk of their job, so too is being fired. Maybe these guys have just been unlucky, maybe there is more to it than that, but in either case they need to fall on their swords for the City of Portland. Westerman needs to be fired, Nice needs to be fired, and Humphreys needs to be fired; I guess we will have to wait for the last one to bully someone off duty, but knowing these guys we won't have to wait very long.

He'd feel much better if he lost thirty or forty pounds.

Soooo-weeee!

You can bet your last round of ammo this old police dog has never once picked up the phone and apologized to the couple he scared the bejesus out of twice. And I would bet you my dollars for your donut there is domestic violence in the complaint filed for divorce. We have much more to learn about this out of berry cowboy who has already killed one mentally ill citizen. Hang on to your handlebars the Queens Cowboys have not performed their last circus.

Does anyone actually believe that Westerman did this one time and one time only and got caught. Please the other cops were trying hard to cover for him with the whole, plate comes back non identifiable garbage. Just like they say that when a DUII driver gets caught it is usually on the 20th or 30th time Westerman has probably pulled this crap a bunch of times. Maybe not always flashing his badge but for sure this isn't road rage number 1 for him.

Plus I don't buy the not under the influence either, too bad the city can't require him to take a drug test. Maybe that ought to be changed in this round of contract negotiations.
10
I might believe his ex wife.

Gots 2 be at least one or a lotta Intel nerd herd folks or PSU or OSHU math Ph.dD prodigy who wants to perform a

huge public service for the grateful mathematically illiterate if they were to create one of those hyper-complicated, white board theorems that could be preferably distilled down to a 25 word plain English layperson's explanation.

sarah matt or swh :

run a contest (winner gets an i-pad?) for the first geek(s) who apply(s) logic and abstract reasoning create irrefutable argument to definitely disprove that union mouthpie's lie about the sheer "coincidence' of him running into the same woman twice in 2 days (?!)

Is there not several someones who can step up and post blog demonstrate he is not only lying but that he had to have been -was in deed and fact - aided and abetted by the 9-1-1- operators and who know who else.

and Hey to ya black box street marchy folks - go find a libertarian math wizard - ask her what she loves to eat when she's doing that math thing - and then give lots and lots for days and days to her as 'barter'
SO SHE WHO IS MATH WIZARD CAN GIVE US THE PENULTIMATE PROOF - THE "PDX COP LIAR'S THEOREM".

Please no Occom's Razor type of theorems
