You have been openly hostile toward the Timbers, the Timbers Army and the renovation of PGE Park for most of the last 18 months. Why would any Timbers fan want to be a part of that?
2
Our Matty should cover the Timbers. He loves football, or soccer as you yanks call it. Real working class sport innit.
3
@Daaaave: You're making the incorrect assumption that the writer should be a fan of the Timbers. A better writer would be critical of the Timbers and not just a fanboy that's shlobbing their knob constantly.
4
Of course. Why would the soccer writer be knowledgeable about the sport? It would ruin the Merc's entire ethos. The Timbers drew 15,000+ for their season opener last weekend, obviously not covered at all this week by the Merc. Good luck finding a soccer fan in this town who isn't also a Timbers fan.

Nothing says halfassery like waiting until a season begins to put a call out for someone to cover it. Can't wait to read the "critical" reports about the Timbers, full of tactical nous and keen insight.

How about Emily Gibson, over at www.themeatshow.com ? She seems to go to every game and be a big fan. I bet she'd jump at the chance AND write stuff worth reading...

Daaaaave:
While certain Mercury employees (not all by any stretch of the imagination) questioned and even disapproved of how the MLS deal went down, we can still love and support the Timbers, can't we? As proof you may remember Mark Evans' excellent coverage of the Timbers on Blogtown last season. (Unfortunately he's in China now, which makes it a little difficult to cover the games live. Hence the shout out for a new writer!) So here's a good solution: if you'd like to apply for this very fun job, DO! If you don't, DON'T!

fuck matt davis
8
We actually ran something about the Timbers opening game in last week's paper.
And yeah, what Steve said.
9
Mark is a personal friend of mine and I knew his work well. How many times did you publish his excellent work?

Every step of the way you "questioned" the deal, using debunked assumptions and faulty facts. Every time you were called out on it, you ignored the corrections and persisted in continuing to mislead your readers.

Again I ask: if you "love and support the Timbers", why has there not been one mention of a sold-out stadium in your blog this week? Why wait until the season started to cover the team? Do you really expect Timbers fans to forget months of taunting by Matt Davis when it appeared that a 3rd vote to renovate the stadium wasn't going to materialize?

Hey. 250,000 purported Blogtown readers. Looking for some hot Timbers blog action?

And unlike the Merc, they won't shit on you every time you're not looking, or it's the offseason, or they think they'll get better numbers by attracted the bojack crowd.
10
@Daaaave: That's the kind of name-calling and grudge-holding that really endears you and yours to everyone else. Keep up the good work!
11
Emily Gibson from pdx.fm can't read or write!
She would be a great fit for the Merc.
12
yo timbers fans. whatever you think of mark davis, any coverage of the insane awesomeness that are timbers games in the portland mercury can only be good news for attracting more fans to the sport. get off yr high horses and be happy that the mercury will start bringing attention of the team to the demographic most likely to attend a game.
13
Timbers fans coming off like a bunch of spoiled children? Breaking fucking news.

It's exactly this kind of willfully ignorant, thick-skulled boosterism that makes me loathe the idea of going to a Timbers game. I don't need to hear some douche-jocks scream a bunch of drunk dittohead shit. You're not hooligans, you're just assholes.

Props to the Mercury for trying to avoid printing that pap.
14
wait... I didn't get paid. I didn't even get press credentials! BURN....
15
It's exactly Chunty's kind of willfully ignorant, broad-brush judgments that keep me coming back to Blogtown every day for the lolz. You're not witty, you're just an asshole.

@ ambrown

It's actually the exact opposite. Those of us who have been doing this Timbers things for awhile have a real fear of the extreme douchiness of Mercury demographic readers coming to Timbers games.

The Timbers are doing just fine without the Merc. They didn't need them 5 years ago, last year and they don't need it now. The Merc and it's readers jumping on the Timbers bandwagon is my greatest fear about MLS coming to Portland.

But not to worry, they are going to hire some hipster douchebag who doesn't know a thing about the sport, the Timbers or the cultural. He/She's only charge will try to generate hits like Matt Davis did by talking mad shit. If you look at the history of this blog the most commented stories are when Matt trolled the very internet savvy and loyal Timbers fans who enjoyed pouncing on the blog and fighting with him.

In the end real Timbers fans will laugh at whomever this new reader is for their hit trolling. But some will come on here and get upset. The Mercury will get their "hits" so they can be the biggest blog in town and everyone will be happy.
17
The Merc seems to be all about writing knob-schlobbing fanboy pieces. [Insert brown nosing Sam Adams article here.]
18
Why one earth would you want to hire MORE bloggers? I hate the bloggers you already have!
19
Is Phil Busse available, I know he covered the Timbers quite well a few years ago.
20
Just throw some right wing political lawn signs on the soccer field and he'll be there in a flash.
21
I second the vote for Emily Gibson @ pdx.fm / The Meat Show - literacy is overrated, her enthusiasm for beer, tits, and yelling are worthy additions to the Merc, undoubtedly.
22
I'll throw in a "yea" for Ms Emily Gibson. She's not only completely nonsensical, but her yelling and expletives are legendary. Otherwise, good luck with your search.

Please wait...
