My high school, which was low income and not that much smaller than this one (2500ish) also had a very strong, nationally competitive choral program, and I can tell you, it saved a lot of kids. It gave us a place to be and something to be proud of. Music, theatre, arts, and PE programs give students who might not naturally succeed at academics a way to foster their special talents. I'm pleased to see the school embrace that.
I just saw the budget for an elementary music program in a David Douglas school for next year. Let's just say you can't make a trip to the grocery store with what is allotted for the entire elementary school for a full year of music. And that's not even guaranteed. It's the teachers who make it a great program.
