I don't understand, though, why he's not applauded for manipulating the whole corporate ogre by posting cheap YouTubes from his basement. If his style had been punk, hardcore, or some other implicitly-DIY genre, his ubiquity would be cheered, rather than functioning as a target for parody and disdain.

There is really one main difference between a bieb and a cobain, in 10 years everyone who likes bieb now will be embarrassed to admit it, whereas 10 years on I still hear nirvana playing on someone's radio nearly every day. Actually the best way for the bieb to stay relevant would be to kill himself now as then people could say, "he would have been great someday" instead of what they will say, "I can't believed I liked that when I was 8."
