Don't we have a law against advertising in the public right of way? Doesn't this violate that?

If nothing else, we have a longstanding aversion to advertising in the public right of way, so tsk tsk.

Probably not an ad, but a change in the color of the lights at the base of the supports. Anyone can do this: http://www.lightthebridges.org/

@Google It: It'll be interesting if that's all it is. Without a logo or something like that on display, it doesn't seem like there'd be much reason to go to all the trouble of setting it up.

Erik, that's all it's going to be. They change them for the seasons and various holidays; most people won't notice this one or give a shit.

If that's all it is, I'm going to be pretty disappointed. (Admittedly, at this point, I won't be pleased with anything short of a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade-style inflatable giant balloon in the shape of John Malkovich, hovering menacingly over the bridge.)

It's cheap, and gave them a hook to send out a press release that resulted in your blog post. You just proved it was worth going to the trouble.
8
Again: DISAPPOINTED.

Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich!
