There are lots of different kinds of Buddhism, though.
There's Buddhism that is more of a philosophy than a religion, Zen is like that, and then there's Buddhism that incorporates all different kinds of supernatural elements. The Buddhism that's practiced in Myanmar/Burma is very entwined with traditional superstitions, and the regime there has made some pretty batshit policy changes based on the advice of Buddhist mystics and astrologers.
And yeah, Zen (at least the kind the Shunryu Suzuki introduced Americans to) was/is pretty chill. However, it's not an incorruptible religion(s). There have been/are some nasty corners of Buddhism hanging about.
@Unicode Travesty - The book I'm reading now says Buddhism has a long history of extremely nasty religious wars. The westernized Buddhism you're talking about is just very recent, vague, 'new ageism' that cherry picks some tenents, ignores others, and denies others.
Don't want to be a buddhist? Walk away quite easily.
