OS X has never been particularly more secure than any other modern operating system, it just never had a large enough install base to make it worthwhile for the blackhats to bother with. This is no longer the case; shit is gonna start getting real for those smug applefaced assholes.

You have to be a moron to install software through your browser and then enter your credit card information. If you get infected by this MacDefender, it proves you are an idiot. It's pretty simple to not install this 'virus'.

"...it takes the user to a web site whose page contains an unsafe JavaScript code that automatically downloads a file. The download is a compressed ZIP archive, which opens automatically, if a specific option within a web browser is checked i.e to Open "safe" files after downloading incase of Safari.
Once the zip file download is complete, an auto decompression follows. The user is then greeted with the "two-faced" installer window..."

A new variant of MacDefender is out there that can install without an admin code. Two workarounds until Apple fixes:

1) Turn off "open safe files"
2) Do not use your Admin level login on your Mac for daily use, create a separate "User Level" account on your Mac for added safety.

Please wait...
