Thanks, that's interesting. I've heard of some academic presses using a similar threshold of units that have to sell before the author is owed royalties--a threshold that there is little chance of a specialist text ever reaching. I guess my responses would be: 1) people should review their contracts before signing them 2) many of these creators probably could not do better elsewhere, and 3) it's unfair to assume that the publisher should always have to bear the burden of virtually all risks in their business, which they typically do.
Trivial perhaps, but here's that noun 'creative' again. (I thought maybe it was just the bearded man on the street that the Merc interviewed who said things like "I'm a creative.") In a publishing context, why not just say "the creators" instead of "creatives"?
