Just the other day a friend of mine witnessed a suicide on the Fremont bridge. He was driving by and saw a guy park his car on the shoulder, climb up on the rail, and jump off. Shook him up pretty bad.
Attributing a rise in suicide to the economy is a ridiculous assertion by a person who should know better.
Untreated mental illness (including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others) is the cause for the vast majority of suicides.
If there is a rise in a community's suicide rate, look to the accessibility of help for persons with addiction and mental health issues. Over the past three years access to these services has been intentionally reduced by all four adjoining Portland metro counties and the state of Oregon.
#2 It seems logical to me that the economy could trigger despair leading to suicide.
All those people leaping to their deaths after the crash of '29 seems a good example.

Congrads and condolences.
