If Heat Miser doesn't win, I'm going to make 3,650 Blogtown comments in 2012.

Don't make that many comments Todd. I think that kind of aggressive commenting would dillute the Mecklem brand.
9
I do think it's interesting that the most depressing songs are getting the most votes.

I vote in solidarity with Todd

@Steve: That's because Christmas is fucking depressing.

Christmas is a time when you're acutely aware of all of your friends and family who are far away from you for factors beyond their control or for shitty reasons. It's when everyone reflects on people who aren't there, either because friendships and family relationships have become strained, or because people have fucking died. It's when you think about all the things you promised to do over the past year, and didn't, all of the people you wanted to see, and didn't, and all of the existential satisfaction that has otherwise eluded you.

Sure, it's fun. It's not horrible. I like Christmas and all that. But it's a time when empty spots at the table are emptier. That's why the depressing songs are winning. They're all about going home for Christmas, turning to an empty chair, and then getting a sharp little cold feeling in the back of your throat.

"Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues w/ Kirsty MacColl. But only because Mojo Nixon's "Son of Santa" isn't there.

I do not view the results of this poll as binding in any way.
