"the city only has only a 40 percent success rate in getting cited jumpers to pay"

I've noticed that when they're busting someone, they don't ask to see an ID; they ask the freeloader for their name and address etc. So are some people just giving fake info?

@1 yes. I am totally in favor of this because I used to support the warning system, but a lot of people abused it. I have had a machine not work and I was not cited because all you need to do is give them the station where you boarded. I have seen them give less breaks to people ( mostly under 30) but I have overheard a lot of kids say things like "I already have 2 exclusions, I don't need this shit". So pay the fucking fare! If you are going to work, you must have some money, right? Obviously we are talking about MAX, because it's fairly hard to ride a bus for free. Also, there is a large free zone. Pay the damn fare for your sake and everyone else's( or do you want them to keep hiking up fares?)

I only ever see fare inspectors out in the 'burbs where most people are work commuters and have fare and they catch pretty much no one. Then there are trains late at night that are like Lord of the Flies and there's not a trimet employee in sight. I think they want to earn their inflated salaries without actually having to work for it.
4
"the city" didn't do anything. Trimet is completely separate from city government.
5
did they lay out when these actions are happening and the economic profiles of the folks being warned, cited, etc.? how much of this enforcement is happening to the "stereotypical scofflaws - freeloaders" that appear that are the bane of every oregonlive commenter and how many are poor people trying to get around town who can't pay now and will have a harder time when the fares jump again?
6
@seanpdx: There are 13 fare inspectors, and they each issue an average of 100-150 citations a month, and you say they're not doing their job?
7
@seanpdx...I have been on those trains. I can't say I blame them. Also, they are generally half empty. @5...I don't have much money at all and I always pay. It's not worth a 100$ fine. Half the people I see cited are kids in school or people under thirty going to or from a show/ party. I think they can afford it if I can, as it is very hard financially for me right now.

I'm against it, here's why:

Fare enforcement has never been high on the list of priorities for Trimet, now in business for 42 years.
For 40 years they have had this laissez-faire attitude about fares and fare enforcement.
Then all of a sudden the power elite of TRIMET decide that fares are important and must be collected and enforced.
They sprung this change on an unwitting and uneducated population and now brag at the "great job" they are doing.
The power elite have done nothing to simplify the fare system, or secure the MAX stations, or even make sure the ticket machines are 100% reliable.
Nope, they are just proud that they have been able to sik the cops and fare inspectors on a mostly poor and unsuspecting population.
Personally, I think its pathetic that citizens are not even given a first time warning, its just another example of government preying on the citizens to sustain itself.

It's not a power elite or government repression or black helicopters. You should run for public office with that faux-populist horse shit, condescension toward an "uneducated population," and appealing to people's selfish impulses. Tri-Met has always known fares are important but have been issuing mostly warnings and focusing on "education" for years, and yet people continue to steal fares, costing the rest of us.
Here's a constructive suggestion: if you're worried about ticket machines not being 100% reliable, then you need to carry a spare ticket in your wallet and validate it before you board. Problem solved. Very few of the citations have anything to do with that.

@geyser (I know you hate me and such but) agree 100%

I'm fine with fare inspections. I'm not okay with people being targeted by fare inspectors. I'm not okay with their ability to give exclusions and citations even when presented with valid fare. I'm not okay with the bully behavior of fare inspectors. I'm very much opposed to forcing any citizen to produce an ID card, especially if they've proven they have fare. I don't care if ANY fare inspector thinks a person is lying about their age or name or address. In this country we are all presumed innocent and we are not required to carry ID cards.

I'm not okay with Trimet "hearings" not really being about listening to the customers they serve. Trimet is a bully. I feel sick that I'm poor enough to be forced to use their services. If anyone thinks Trimet doesn't unfairly target poor people, think again. I don't like that people get harassed by Trimet fare inspectors. Their behavior is nothing short of rent-a-cop behavior. It isn't a safe or pleasant environment.

If Trimet really wants ridership up and make their budget shortfall, they'd be better off spending money on eliminating the crime that happens on Trimet, keep fare inexpensive and make it a better commute for the average person.

Please wait...
