@Graham: I'm assuming that you were probably being sarcastic, but just in case:
Ladies night at comic shops are awesome because every night is men's night. As AH pointed out, Portland is SUPER AWESOME because we're pretty gender balanced when it comes to comics. But sadly, this isn't the case in most brick-and-mortar stores around the country, where girls feel alienated when they walk in to comic shops.
There is also a blog that exists to give recognition to female fans from all over the place, to show people that women buy comics, too:
